Chapter 4 - The Intruder on the Balcony

The nursery window swung open with a faint, ghostly squeak, letting in a sharp gust of midnight autumn air that fluttered the pastel curtains. Maya scrambled backward across the hardwood floor, scooping up a sleeping Leo into her arms and holding him defensively against her chest as a dark silhouette stepped over the windowsill. The figure moved with practiced stealth, ducking beneath the amber glow of the star-shaped nightlight before stepping forward into the muted illumination.
It wasn't a burglar, and it certainly wasn't Eleanor. It was Julian, the brilliant young forensic accountant Maya had secretly hired three months ago to audit Eleanor’s charitable foundation.
“Julian? What on earth are you doing here? Are you out of your mind breaking into a house like this?” Maya whispered fiercely, her heart hammering against her ribs as she clutched the baby tighter.
Julian pulled down his dark hoodie, his face pale and slick with nervous sweat as he glanced anxiously back toward the hallway door.
“I had to come, Maya, because your mother-in-law just executed the second phase of her plan an hour ago,” Julian said rapidly, keeping his voice to a frantic whisper. “She didn't just leak your old Chicago court records to Marcus tonight. She filed an emergency petition with the probate court claiming you are an unfit mother due to your past, seeking full legal custody of baby Leo.”
Maya felt the floor drop out from under her, her breath catching in her throat as the horrifying puzzle pieces snapped into sharp focus.
“That’s why she threw that party, and that’s why she pushed me to my absolute breaking point in the kitchen,” Maya realized aloud, the terror giving way to a fierce, protective maternal rage. “She wanted Marcus to see me snap, she wanted the photos of the mess, and she wanted him to isolate me so she could blindside us both legally.”
Julian nodded urgently, pulling a thick laminated document out from his backpack and thrusting it toward her.
“You need to leave this house tonight, Maya,” Julian urged, grabbing her arm gently. “I have a car waiting down the street, and safe lodgings prepared across the state line. If you stay here while Marcus is under her manipulation, you will lose your son by tomorrow afternoon.”
Maya looked down at sleeping Leo, then toward the locked nursery door where Marcus was currently stewing in his misplaced anger downstairs.
“I can’t run away, Julian,” Maya said, her jaw setting with stubborn resolve. “If I run, Eleanor wins, and Marcus will spend the rest of his life believing I was a criminal who kidnapped his child.”
Julian stared at her in disbelief, shaking his head as he stepped back toward the open window.
“You’re playing a game you’ve already lost, Maya—look behind you,” Julian whispered, pointing a trembling finger toward the nursery door.

Maya spun around just as the heavy brass doorknob began to slowly turn from the outside.
