Chapter 11 - Darkness in the Precinct

The emergency exit sign cast an eerie, emerald glow across the interrogation room as the building’s main power grid died with a low, electrical hum. Eleanor’s security guards immediately reached for their waistbands, their professional calm fracturing into sudden anxiety in the shadows. Marcus stood tall beside the metal table, his hand resting securely over the silver flash drive hidden beneath his handkerchief.

“What kind of cheap parlor trick is this, Marcus?” Eleanor demanded, her voice rising slightly in pitch as she looked toward the dark hallway. “Turn the lights back on right now, or I will have every officer in this precinct fired before morning.”

Maya kept her hands steady, listening closely to the faint, rhythmic clicking of distant computer servers shutting down across the building.

“It’s not a parlor trick, Eleanor,” Maya said calmly from the darkness. “It’s the automated firewall Julian set up to trigger the moment federal servers received our encrypted data packet.”

Before Eleanor could reply, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room was kicked open with a thunderous crash, flooding the room with the blinding white light of tactical flashlights.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!” shouted a gruff voice from the doorway, as half a dozen armed agents in tactical gear swarmed into the cramped space, weapons drawn.

Eleanor’s private security guards immediately raised their hands, dropping their concealed firearms onto the linoleum floor as the lead federal agent stepped forward, holding up a badge and an arrest warrant signed by a federal judge.

“Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice,” the lead agent announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

Eleanor staggered backward against the concrete wall, her face draining of all color as the heavy steel handcuffs were snapped firmly around her wrists.

“This is a mistake! My son is a Vance! You cannot do this to me!” Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as she was dragged toward the doorway.

Marcus stepped past his mother without a single word of pity, walking directly over to the detective’s desk to retrieve the key for Maya’s handcuffs.

As the cold metal cuffs fell away from Maya’s wrists, she collapsed into Marcus’s arms, burying her face in his shoulder as the nightmare finally began to lift.

“It’s over, Maya. We’re safe,” Marcus whispered into her hair, kissing her forehead as the flashing red squad car lights filtered through the precinct windows.

As the agents led Eleanor down the hallway toward the holding cells, she turned back and whispered a chilling final warning that froze them both in their tracks.
