Chapter 5 - The Unlocked Door

The brass doorknob turned with a slow, deliberate click, the metal mechanism echoing like a gunshot in the quiet nursery. Maya spun around, her heart leaping into her throat, but the open window behind her remained empty—Julian had already slipped back out into the night like a ghost, leaving behind only the rustle of the curtains and the cold draft of air. The door creaked open, revealing Marcus standing in the threshold, his tuxedo jacket gone, his white dress shirt rumpled and his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.
Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Maya’s panicked expression to the wide-open window letting in the freezing night wind.
“Who was in here, Maya?” Marcus demanded, his voice dangerously low as he strode into the room, his eyes scanning the dark corners of the nursery. “I heard voices. Who are you talking to behind my back?”
Maya stood protectively over the crib where little Leo had shifted uncomfortably, blinking awake and letting out a faint, sleepy whimper.
“No one was here, Marcus,” Maya lied smoothly, lifting the baby into her arms to soothe him, though her hands trembled visibly. “I was talking to myself, trying to process the nightmare your mother just dropped into our lives.”
Marcus stepped closer, the scent of expensive scotch and cold autumn air clinging to his clothes, his expression a mix of profound hurt and stubborn suspicion. He reached out to touch the cold window sill, his fingers brushing against a smear of fresh mud left behind on the white frame by Julian’s boots.
“That is fresh mud, Maya,” Marcus said, turning to face her with a gaze that cut straight through her defenses. “Someone was on our balcony, someone helped you, and you are lying to me right inside our son’s bedroom.”
Maya felt a hot tear escape her eye, but she refused to cower, stepping up to her husband and looking him dead in the eye.
“I am lying because you locked me in like a criminal instead of listening to the truth,” Maya fired back, her voice shaking with righteous indignation. “Your mother isn't just trying to ruin my reputation, Marcus. She filed an emergency petition with the probate court tonight to take Leo away from us.”
Marcus froze, his hand dropping from the window sill as a flicker of genuine shock crossed his features.
“That’s impossible,” Marcus muttered, shaking his head in denial. “My mother can be controlling, but she would never try to take my child away from our family.”
“Open your email, Marcus,” Maya challenged, gesturing sharply toward his phone resting on the rocking chair. “She didn’t just mail those photos to you; she filed the custody papers with her family attorney two hours before the party even started.”
Marcus snatched up his phone from the cushion, his fingers flying across the screen as he accessed his corporate legal portal.
“No,” Marcus whispered, the color draining from his face as a PDF notification flashed red on his screen, confirming every word Maya had just spoken.

Before Marcus could look up to meet her eyes, a deafening crash echoed from the ground floor below, shattering the front windows of the estate.
