Chapter 8 - The System Reboot And The Surveillance Files

The smart-home terminal in the hallway hummed softly as its high-resolution screen blinked through a series of diagnostic loading bars. The blue light cast long, eerie shadows across the polished wooden floors of the foyer, illuminating the sparkling glass shards that still littered the area from the shattered picture frame. Elena stood just feet away from the console, her fingers poised inches from the touchscreen interface, while Arthur writhed on the kitchen floor, groaning in pain from Evelyn’s precise cane strike.

"Don't touch that screen, Elena! I'm warning you!" Arthur shouted from the floor, his voice cracking with desperation as he tried to push himself up on his hands and knees. His black bow tie was now completely gone, and his short brown hair was matted with sweat. "If you open those files, you aren't just destroying my career—you're opening a door to people who will not hesitate to come after this family!"

Elena paused, her hand hovering over the glass interface. She looked back over her shoulder, her emerald green dress swaying slightly as she stared down at her husband with an expression of profound disappointment.

"Arthur, listen to yourself," Elena said, her voice steady and echoing through the quiet house. "You are sitting on a kitchen floor, threatening your own wife and child, all to protect whatever illegal enterprise you and Marcus Vance cooked up behind my back. There are no corporate bogeymen coming after us. The only danger in this house right now is you."

"She's right, you fool," Evelyn added, stepping gracefully out of the kitchen and leaning on her wooden cane. Her blue dress rustled with an air of absolute authority. "You dug your own grave the moment you decided that greed was more important than your family's safety. Now let the system show what really happened tonight."

Elena pressed her index finger firmly against the glass screen. The terminal beeped softly in acknowledgment, and the primary interface shifted from the live outdoor camera feeds to the secure internal audit logs. A progress wheel spun lazily in the center of the display: Restoring Cloud Archive – 84%... 91%... Complete.

A directory of video files appeared on the screen, neatly organized by timestamps. The very first file at the top of the list was labeled: Foyer_Main_2045_Encrypted.

"There it is," Elena whispered, her breath hitching slightly. Without hesitation, she tapped the file.

The screen flickered, and the high-definition video began to play. The angle was from the upper corner of the foyer, looking down precisely at the spot where the picture frame had shattered earlier that evening. The timestamp read 20:42:15.

On the screen, a younger, crisper version of the current moment unfolded in absolute silence. The video showed Arthur standing alone in the dark foyer, carefully lifting the heavy black-framed picture off the wall hook. It clearly showed him opening the back latch, sliding out the matte-black micro USB flash drive, and taping it securely to the reverse side of the wooden backing. Then, with a cold, deliberate smirk, Arthur raised the frame high above his head and smashed it intentionally onto the polished oak floorboards, sending glass shards flying in every direction.

Seconds later, the video showed him rehearsing his angry expression in the mirror before Lily even walked into the room.

Arthur stopped trying to stand. He slumped back against the kitchen cabinets, his eyes fixed on the glowing screen in the hallway, where his entire deception was playing out in high definition for everyone to see.

"It's all there," Arthur whispered, the fight completely draining out of him.

Before anyone could speak, the front door’s heavy smart-lock clicked, and the sharp, authoritative knock of the local police echoed through the quiet suburban entryway.
