Chapter 3 - Footsteps In The Kitchen And The Open Door

The sound of the back door latching open sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through the tense atmosphere of the foyer. Elena didn't wait for Arthur to process the noise; she spun around on her heel and sprinted down the short hallway toward the kitchen, her green dress rustling sharply against her legs. Arthur cursed under his breath, his patent leather dress shoes clicking loudly on the hardwood as he hurried right behind her, his anger momentarily eclipsed by a sudden, sharp spike of parental panic.
They burst into the brightly lit kitchen, expecting the worst. Instead, they found Evelyn standing calmly by the kitchen island, pouring a glass of water from a crystal pitcher. Lily sat safely on a high stool, her white dress shoes dangling a few inches above the floor, holding a small paper cup of juice. The heavy glass back door leading out to the patio, however, was wide open, letting in a cool, damp autumn breeze that made the sheer curtains dance wildly.
"Grandma, why is the door open?" Elena asked, her breath coming in shallow gasps as she rushed to Lily’s side, checking her daughter frantically for any signs of harm. "Did someone just come in here?"
Evelyn took a slow sip of her water, setting the crystal glass down with a soft clink before answering. Her expression was unreadable, carved from decades of weathering family storms and unspoken secrets.
"I opened it," Evelyn said evenly, her voice cutting through Elena’s rising panic. "The air in this house was becoming entirely unbreathable. And as for someone coming in, I thought perhaps you two would prefer a little fresh oxygen before you finished tearing each other apart over a child's phantom guilt."
Arthur skidded to a halt in the doorway, his black tuxedo jacket clinging tightly to his broad shoulders. He wiped a hand across his forehead, where a sheen of cold sweat had broken out. "Mother, that is completely irresponsible. You left a door wide open to the street with an intruder potentially wandering around the neighborhood?"
"There is no intruder outside, Arthur," Evelyn replied, turning her sharp blue eyes onto her son. "The only person acting like an intruder in this family tonight is you, prowling around your own home like a cornered animal with something desperately to hide."
"I have nothing to hide," Arthur snapped, though his eyes darted nervously toward the open patio door and the dark, sprawling lawn beyond it.
"Is that why the security server in your study was manually disconnected from the network exactly four minutes before the power grid went down?" Evelyn asked quietly, leaning against the marble countertop.
The kitchen fell into a stunned, absolute silence. Even the wind seemed to die down, leaving only the faint hum of the refrigerator in the background. Lily looked up from her juice cup, her wide blue eyes darting confusedly between her father, her mother, and her grandmother. Elena slowly straightened up, turning her gaze back to her husband with a look of profound betrayal.
"You did it," Elena whispered, the accusation hanging heavy in the air. "You deleted the footage yourself."
May you like
Arthur opened his mouth to deny it, but before a single word could pass his lips, a heavy thud echoed from the dark patio just beyond the open door, followed by the unmistakable sound of breaking glass.
