Chapter 7 - The Hidden Flash Drive And The Corporate Conspiracy

The small object resting in the palm of Lily’s small, outstretched hand was not a piece of shattered glass. It was a matte-black micro USB flash drive, small and inconspicuous, but instantly recognizable to anyone in the tech industry. Arthur stared at it as if it were a venomous snake, his breath catching in his throat. The panic in his eyes was no longer masked by anger or denial; it was pure, unadulterated terror.
"Where did you find that?" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling so violently that the words barely carried across the quiet kitchen.
"It was taped to the back of the picture frame," Lily replied innocently, her blue eyes blinking up at him without a trace of fear, only a profound, heartbreaking sadness. "When you smashed it on the floor, the tape broke, and it rolled right under my shoe. I picked it up so you wouldn't lose it, Daddy. But then you started yelling at me."
Elena slowly reached out, her fingers gently taking the black flash drive from her daughter's palm. The emerald green fabric of her dress rustled softly as she moved. She turned the tiny device over in her hand, her expression hardening into a mask of cold resolve.
"So," Elena said, her voice chillingly quiet. "The wall safe wasn't robbed by Marcus Vance tonight, was it? Or at least, not entirely. This drive was in your office safe, Arthur. You pulled it out, taped it to the back of the family portrait, and then staged the entire break-in narrative to make it look like an outside job."
Arthur took a stumbling step backward, holding up his hands in a defensive gesture. "Elena, listen to me. You don't understand how high the stakes are. Vance isn't just a business partner; he’s tied to people who... people who don't negotiate. If I didn't hide those encryption keys, they would have taken everything from us. Everything!"
"By sacrificing your own daughter's innocence?" Evelyn stepped into the space between them, her tall, commanding presence towering over her son despite her age. Her blue dress and pearl necklaces seemed to radiate a cold, aristocratic fury. "You pathetic coward. You were willing to let the police drag your seven-year-old child into an interrogation room as a thief just to cover up your own illicit corporate dealings."
"Mother, stay out of this!" Arthur roared, a desperate edge to his voice. He lunged forward, reaching out to snatch the flash drive from Elena’s hand. "Give that back to me! If that drive gets plugged into an unsecure network, the decryption sequence starts automatically, and our entire system goes live to the federal investigators!"
Elena sidestepped him with practiced ease, holding the flash drive high out of his reach. She looked at the small black device with a mixture of disgust and grim satisfaction.
"Then maybe it's time the authorities finally took a look at what you and Marcus have been building behind closed doors," Elena said firmly. She turned toward the wall smart-terminal in the hallway. "The power grid is back up. The system is rebooting."
Before Arthur could lunge at her again, the soft chime of the smart-home terminal echoed through the house, followed by the bright blue glow of the screen flickered back to life. The security system was online, and the automated cloud backup was already syncing the corrupted footage from the master server.
"Don't do it, Elena!" Arthur screamed, diving across the kitchen island in a desperate, reckless tackle.

He didn't make it. Evelyn swept her heavy wooden cane out with startling speed, catching Arthur squarely across his shins. He tripped hard, crashing heavily onto the kitchen floor, his black tuxedo jacket ripping slightly at the elbow as he hit the tiles with a sharp groan of pain.
