Chapter 13 - The Morning After And The Unopened Letter

The morning sun filtered gently through the tall arched windows of the suburban home, casting warm, golden rays across the polished wooden floors of the foyer. The shattered glass had been completely cleared away, leaving only the faint, jagged scars on the oak boards as a silent testament to the night before. The house was unnaturally quiet, devoid of the angry shouts and heavy footfalls that had terrorized its halls just twelve hours earlier.

Elena sat at the kitchen island, nursing a cup of black coffee while the morning news played quietly on the smart-home terminal. The headlines scrolling across the bottom of the screen flashed brief, clinical summaries of the corporate scandal: Tech Startup Sterling-Vance Assets Frozen Amid Federal Fraud Investigation. Arthur was currently being held at the county detention center downtown, awaiting a formal arraignment hearing scheduled for Monday morning.

Lily sat a few seats down, calmly eating a bowl of oatmeal. She wore a simple yellow sundress today, a cheerful contrast to the stark white party dress from the night before, and her blonde hair was brushed straight back, free of clips or pins. She looked peaceful, entirely untethered from the heavy emotional burden she had been forced to carry.

Evelyn entered the kitchen from the hallway, carrying a small silver tray with a single white envelope resting upon it. Her blue dress was replaced today by a comfortable beige cardigan and navy trousers, and she moved with her usual steady, deliberate grace. She walked directly over to Elena and set the silver tray down on the marble countertop.

"What is that?" Elena asked, her eyes narrowing slightly as she stared at the plain white envelope, which bore no return address or postal stamp.

"It was slipped under the front door sometime around dawn," Evelyn explained, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite them. Her expression was tight, guarded in a way Elena had rarely seen. "The front security cameras were still rebooting from the network reset last night, so there's no digital footage of who dropped it off. But it’s addressed to you, Elena."

Elena set her coffee mug down with a soft clink. She reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she picked up the envelope. The paper felt heavy, expensive, and cold. She carefully slid her thumb under the flap, tearing it open to reveal a single sheet of heavy cardstock covered in neat, typed lettering.

Lily looked up from her oatmeal, her blue eyes fixing on her mother’s face. "Is it from Daddy?"

"No, sweetheart, it's not from Daddy," Elena said, her voice barely a whisper as her eyes scanned the first few lines of the text. The color rapidly drained from her face, leaving her skin stark white against the warm morning light.

Evelyn leaned forward, resting her hands on the edge of the counter. "What does it say, Elena? Don't keep us in suspense."

Elena looked up from the letter, her chest rising and falling in shallow, panicked gasps as she read the final line aloud, realizing that Arthur’s arrest wasn't the end of their nightmare—it was only the opening act.
