Chapter 6

The howling wind rushed into the room, instantly dropping the temperature and extinguishing the candles on the mantle with sudden, smoky puffs. Officer Miller cursed under his breath, shouting into his radio for perimeter units to lock down the street before sprinting out the open doorway into the swirling white blizzard.

Inside, chaos erupted. Grandma Martha was weeping openly, her frail arms wrapped around Arthur, who looked as though he might collapse entirely. Marcus stood paralyzed by the threshold, watching the swirling snow swallow Elena’s retreating figure, his mind racing through the catastrophic fallout of the past ten minutes.

Clara stood frozen in the center of the room, cradling the infant in the green reindeer onesie. The baby had finally quieted, its breathing soft and rhythmic against Clara’s chest, completely oblivious to the hurricane of betrayal surrounding it.

"Marcus," Clara whispered, her voice hollow, devoid of any anger now, replaced by a numb, crushing despair. "Tell me she's lying. Tell me my real baby is still out there."

Marcus turned slowly, his face etched with agonizing guilt. He walked over to Clara, his hands trembling as he reached out, but he stopped short, unable to bring himself to touch her or the child she held.

"I didn't know about the accounts, Clara. I swear to God, I didn't know," Marcus choked out, a sob catching in his throat. "Elena was handling the family estate audits while your father’s health declined. She must have been forging documents for months."

"Months?" Clara’s voice rose, cracking sharply. "She walked into a hospital nursery, Marcus! She took our flesh and blood and replaced him with a stranger! And you were too busy playing corporate games to notice what was happening right under our noses!"

Arthur managed to steady himself, speaking through dry, cracked lips. "She didn't just target us, Clara. Those warrants... the federal papers Miller mentioned. If Elena used my name to launder those funds, the authorities are going to freeze every asset this family owns by morning."

Martha clutched a lace handkerchief to her mouth, her eyes darting toward the frosted windows. "Where could she possibly go in this weather? All the roads out of town are completely blocked by the blizzard."

"She’s not trying to leave town," a deep, authoritative voice interrupted from the doorway.

Everyone spun around. Officer Miller stood inside the foyer, shaking a fresh blanket of snow from his shoulders, looking grim. He held up a set of frosted car keys.

"Her vehicle is parked down the lane with the engine running," Miller said grimly. "And in the back seat, investigators just found a second, empty hospital bassinet."
