Chapter 5

The living room grew so quiet that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a hammer striking an anvil. Officer Miller stared down at the documents in his hand, his expression hardening from professional curiosity into stark disbelief. He looked up, bypassing both Marcus and Elena, and focused his attention entirely on Arthur, the elderly patriarch standing near the sofa.

"Mr. Vance?" Officer Miller asked, his voice low and tense. "Are you Arthur Vance?"

Arthur straightened his shoulders, leaning slightly against the back of the sofa for support. "Yes. I am. What is the meaning of this intrusion, Officer?"

The officer didn't answer immediately. Instead, he slowly folded the papers and tucked them into his inner jacket pocket before reaching for his radio. "Dispatch, I need a backup unit at 442 Elm Street. We have a confirmed match on an active warrant, and... we have a situation involving a disputed infant."

Clara screamed, clutching the baby in the green reindeer onesie so fiercely that the infant let out a sharp cry. "What warrant? What are you talking about? Give me my baby back!"

"Clara, please, step back," Officer Miller said gently, though his hand drifted closer to his handcuffs. "These documents aren't adoption papers, Mr. Vance. They are federal asset seizure warrants, and they are issued under your daughter Elena’s alias, but funded through a shell corporation registered in your name, Arthur."

Arthur’s face turned an ash-gray color. He stumbled backward, his knees buckling slightly before Martha caught his arm, her own eyes wide with sheer terror.

"That’s impossible," Arthur whispered, shaking his head vehemently. "I retired from the corporate board five years ago. I haven't signed a financial instrument in years."

"Oh, Dad, please," Elena interrupted, her voice dripping with a sickening sweetness as she stepped closer to the Christmas tree. "You signed plenty of papers when your memory started slipping last winter. I was just helping you manage your legacy."

Marcus stared at Elena, horror dawning in his eyes as the intricate web of deceit finally snapped into focus. "You framed him. You systematically drained his accounts, used his signature, and then orchestrated the hospital baby swap to create a distraction so we wouldn't look at the financial records until it was too late."

"Smart boy, Marcus," Elena purred, stepping toward the front door. "Too bad you figured it out ten minutes too late."

Before Officer Miller could react, Elena whipped the front door open and bolted out into the blinding snowstorm, leaving the door wide open as the freezing wind blew out the candles on the mantle.
