Chapter 11

The warmth of the living room felt suffocating after the bitter sub-zero temperatures of the railway bridge. Grandma Martha rushed forward with a thick woolen blanket, wrapping it gently around Clara’s shivering shoulders while Arthur slowly pushed himself up from the sofa, his eyes heavy with exhaustion and sorrow.

"Thank God," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling as he reached out to touch Marcus’s arm. "You're all safe. The police called... they secured the second infant. The other family is already on their way to claim their child."

Marcus nodded grimly, stepping away to help Officer Miller escort Elena out to the waiting cruiser. Clara remained standing near the flickering Christmas tree, staring down at the infant still bundled tightly against her chest in the green reindeer onesie.

The baby had finally drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep, its breathing slow and steady. Clara pulled back the edge of the blanket to check the baby's face, brushing a soft curl of hair away from the infant's forehead.

Her hand froze mid-air.

The breath caught in Clara’s throat, turning into a sharp, agonizing gasp that caused Martha to pause mid-sofa. Clara’s eyes widened in horror as she stared at the skin behind the infant’s left ear.

There was no birthmark.

The distinct, crescent-shaped strawberry birthmark that her biological son had possessed since birth—the very mark she had kissed just hours before leaving the hospital nursery—was completely absent. The skin behind this infant's ear was flawless, pale, and entirely unmarked.

Clara stumbled backward, colliding heavily with the holiday-decorated mantelpiece. A small glass ornament wobbled, fell to the hearth, and shattered into a dozen glittering shards.

"Clara? What is it? What’s wrong?" Martha asked anxiously, stepping forward with her hands outstretched. "Are you hurt?"

"This isn't him," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackling of the fire. "This isn't my son."

Marcus walked back into the living room just in time to catch her words. He stopped dead in his tracks, his face draining of whatever color it had managed to recover. "What did you just say, Clara? Of course that's—"

"Look at him, Marcus!" Clara screamed, pulling back the blanket entirely and thrusting the infant toward her husband. "Look behind his ear! The birthmark is gone! My real baby isn't the one Elena swapped, and he isn't the one the police recovered from her car!"

Arthur grabbed the back of the armchair to steady himself, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief. "If neither of those children belongs to you... then whose baby are you holding, Clara?"

Before anyone could answer, the front door swung open again, and Officer Miller stepped back inside, holding a damp manila envelope recovered from Elena’s coat pocket during the booking process.

"Vance," Miller said, his expression grave as he looked around the room. "You might want to see this. We found a manifest inside her coat. It lists three separate hospital transfers made over the last twelve months."
