Chapter 14

The beam of Agent Hayes’s flashlight illuminated the interior of the portable incubator with stark, clinical clarity. Inside the compact glass unit, an infant stirred, letting out a faint, sleepy yawn that sounded impossibly loud in the quiet hallway.

Clara dropped to her knees, letting the baby in the green reindeer onesie rest safely in Marcus’s arms as she reached out with trembling fingers to touch the edge of the incubator door. Tears streamed freely down her face, cutting tracks through the dust and sweat on her cheeks.

"Oh, sweet mercy," Clara whispered, her voice breaking entirely. "Marcus... look. Look at his ear."

Marcus knelt beside her, holding the other infant securely while leaning in close to inspect the child inside the incubator. Behind the baby's left ear, perfectly visible in the bright light of the flashlight, was a distinct, crescent-shaped strawberry birthmark.

It was her son.

"You found him," Marcus choked out, a sob tearing through his chest as he wrapped his free arm around Clara’s shoulders, pulling her close. "Clara, we found him."

Agent Hayes knelt beside them, carefully unlatching the incubator lid and lifting the infant out with practiced, gentle care. He wrapped the baby in the blue-embroidered blanket and handed him directly into Clara’s outstretched arms.

Clara pressed her face against the infant’s soft head, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of her newborn son. The nightmare of the past twelve hours—the screams, the accusations, the trek across the freezing railway bridge—melted away in an instant, replaced by an overwhelming wave of profound, unconditional relief.

Arthur and Martha stood behind them, weeping openly as they watched the family finally reunite.

"Agent Hayes," Arthur said, wiping his eyes with his handkerchief. "What happens to Elena now? How is a person even capable of constructing something like this?"

Hayes stood up, carefully securing the empty incubator as evidence. "Psychiatric evaluations will determine her exact status, Mr. Vance. But based on the federal warrants and the interstate manifest, she won't be seeing the outside of a maximum-security facility for a very long time. This wasn't a temporary breakdown. This was a premeditated operation executed over many months."

Marcus looked down at the infant in his arms—the baby in the green reindeer onesie—realizing with a heavy heart that this child, too, had parents out there somewhere desperately searching for him.

"What about this little one, Agent?" Marcus asked softly, gesturing to the child in the green onesie. "Does the manifest tell us where he belongs?"

Hayes nodded slowly. "Yes. According to the records we decrypted at the precinct, this infant belongs to a family in suburban Denver who reported him missing from a private clinic yesterday morning. Local authorities have already been in touch with them; they’re flying in on the first available emergency flight once the airspace clears."

Clara rocked both babies gently, a profound sense of humanity and closure settling over her weary soul. The storm outside was finally beginning to subside, the howling winds dropping to a gentle whistle against the windowpanes.

Yet, as Agent Hayes turned toward the front door to coordinate the transport teams, a sudden, metallic click from the grandfather clock behind them made everyone freeze in their tracks.
