Chapter 10

The impact echoed sharply over the deafening roar of the passing train. Marcus and Elena slammed hard against the frozen wooden guardrail, sending a shower of wood splinters flying into the dark abyss below. The metallic remote device slipped from Elena’s fingers, clattering across the icy planks before tumbling over the edge and disappearing into the snowy gorge.
Officer Miller was on them in a second, diving onto Elena’s flailing arms and pinning her wrists against the frosted steel framework with practiced efficiency.
"Got you! Don't move!" Miller barked, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt and snapping them around Elena’s wrists with a sharp click.
Elena didn't scream or fight back with brute force; instead, her body went completely limp, her head lolling back against the icy snow as a low, chilling chuckle escaped her lips. Even as the massive locomotive thundered past beneath them, rattling the bridge structure down to its foundations, her eyes remained fixed on the sky with an empty, haunting stare.
Clara stood frozen a few feet away, clutching the baby in the green reindeer onesie. Her legs were shaking so violently she could barely keep her balance on the icy ties. She watched as Marcus pushed himself up from the wooden planks, wincing in pain as he rubbed a bruised shoulder, his breath coming in ragged, freezing gasps.
"Marcus," Clara breathed out, the tension finally breaking as tears welled up in her eyes again, though this time from overwhelming relief. "Are you alright?"
Marcus nodded, wiping snow and sweat from his forehead with the back of his sleeve. He crawled toward Clara on his hands and knees, refusing to trust his footing on the ice, and pulled both Clara and the baby into a desperate, crushing embrace.
"I've got you, Clara. I've got you both," Marcus choked out, burying his face in the folds of her coat. "I am so, so sorry. I swear to you, I will spend the rest of my life making this right."
Officer Miller hauled Elena roughly to her feet, pulling her away from the edge of the platform as the train’s red tail lights faded into the snowy distance, leaving the bridge back in silent, freezing darkness.
"Alright, let's get off this death trap before the weather closes in completely," Miller ordered, gripping Elena firmly by the arm. "Backup should have the transport waiting at the gate by now."
As they began the treacherous trek back across the bridge toward the safety of the property line, Elena didn't say a single word. Her head was bowed, her blonde hair matted with snow, her burgundy blouse stained with mud and frost.

When they finally reached the warmth of the Vance family living room twenty minutes later, the atmosphere had shifted from terrified shock to a heavy, exhausted reckoning. Arthur and Martha were sitting rigidly on the sofa, waiting in agonizing suspense. When the door opened and Marcus stepped inside supporting Clara, Grandma Martha burst into fresh tears of relief.
Yet, as Officer Miller guided Elena toward the patrol car waiting outside, Clara looked down at the infant in the green reindeer onesie, and a sudden, bone-chilling realization stopped her heart entirely.
