Chapter 8 - The Man in the Trench Coat

The man in the dark trench coat stepped across the splintered threshold of Room 412 with terrifying composure. His face was partially obscured by the shadow of a wide-brimmed hat, but his cold, pale eyes locked instantly onto Elena Vance. He didn't look at Williams, and he didn't look at the cowering Miller on the floor. His entire focus was fixed on the black travel bag resting openly on the rumpled bed.
"Agent Vance," the man said, his voice smooth, low, and completely devoid of human warmth. "You have a persistent habit of stepping into matters that do not concern local federal jurisdictions. Put your hands on your head and step away from the bed."
Elena kept her hands loose at her sides, hovering mere inches from her holster. She didn't blink. "You're trespassing in an active federal crime scene, and your weapon is pointed at a sworn law enforcement officer. That's a life sentence in a maximum-security penitentiary."
The man offered a thin, cynical smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Penitentiaries are built for people who exist in the system, Agent Vance. My employers do not write budgets that include prison cells. They write budgets for elimination."
Williams shifted his weight slightly, his finger twitching near the trigger of his service pistol, calculating the trajectory. The trench-coat man didn't even turn his head, but two additional armed operatives stepped up behind him in the doorway, their carbines instantly locking onto Williams's chest with lethal precision.
"Don't do it, Williams," Elena commanded softly, keeping her gaze locked on the leader. "It's a suicide run."
The leader stepped further into the room, his boots crunching on the broken glass from the shattered door frame. He walked directly to the bed, reached out with a gloved hand, and unzipped the black travel bag the rest of the way. His fingers dug into the contents, pushing aside the decoy bundles of paper before pausing. His expression hardened instantly.
"Where is it?" the man whispered, the smooth facade cracking to reveal a sharp, dangerous edge. He grabbed the empty decoy bundles and hurled them across the room. "The ledger, Agent Vance. Where did you put it?"
"She gave it to the woman," Miller blurted out suddenly from the corner, his voice cracking with terror as he pointed frantically toward the open rear window. "She threw it out the back window to the civilian five minutes ago! They're running down the alley right now!"
Elena shot Miller a cold, piercing glare that made the contractor flinch and press himself harder against the wall.
The leader turned his head slowly toward the open window, listening to the damp night wind whistling through the concrete alleyway. He lowered his carbine an inch and tapped his collarbone receiver.

"Team Two, intercept the female civilian heading toward the service station," the leader spoke into his comms. "Do not let her reach the highway. Bring the bag and eliminate the target."
