Chapter 7 - The Breach

The heavy pounding on the door of Room 412 vibrated through the floorboards, followed immediately by the grating screech of a heavy pry bar biting into the wooden doorframe. Splinters of paint and pine rained down onto the threadbare carpet as invisible hands leveraged the lock mechanism from the outside.
"They're coming through!" Williams hissed, shifting his stance near the bed and leveling his pistol at the center of the door. "Elena, we can't hold this threshold if they use a breaching charge."
"We aren't going to fight them here," Elena replied calmly. She tossed the black travel bag onto the rumpled mattress, unzipped the main compartment halfway, and shoved the hand-written leather journal deep beneath a pile of extra motel pillows, leaving only a decoy bundle of blank paper visible inside.
Miller watched her from the floor, his eyes wide with disbelief. "What are you doing? They know what the bag feels like. They'll know the moment they pick it up."
"They'll spend precious seconds realizing it's a decoy," Elena corrected him, pulling Clara toward the open rear window. "Clara, out. Now."
Clara didn't hesitate. She scrambled over the narrow window ledge, her boots scraping against the exterior brickwork before she dropped into the dark alleyway below with a muffled grunt.
"Williams, cover the window," Elena ordered, sliding her service pistol back into its holster as she grabbed a heavy floor lamp from the nightstand and jammed its iron base directly beneath the motel room door handle, creating an improvised mechanical brace. It wouldn't stop a dedicated breach, but it would buy critical seconds.
"Elena, someone's coming down the alley!" Clara's frantic voice hissed from the darkness just beneath the open window. "There's a second team cutting off the back!"
Williams spun away from the door, sprinting toward the window and leaning out with his weapon raised. Two dark figures in tactical gear were already advancing up the narrow concrete trench of the alleyway, moving with cold, synchronized precision.
"We're boxed in," Williams said, his voice dropping an octave. He lowered his gun slowly, looking back at Elena with a grim realization settling over his features. "Front and back. There's no exit left."

With a deafening crunch, the wooden door of Room 412 blew inward. The iron lamp base snapped like a toothpick as the door slammed against the interior wall, revealing a tall man in a dark trench coat standing in the threshold, holding a suppressed automatic carbine pointed straight at Elena's chest.
