Chapter 6 - Into the Shadows

The acrid smell of cordite drifted through the dark breezeway as another heavy round slammed into the metal railing, sending a shower of orange sparks cascading down into the courtyard below. Elena kept her back pressed hard against the rough brick wall, her eyes adjusting rapidly to the sudden gloom. The overhead fluorescent fixtures were shattered husks of glass and twisted wire, leaving only the faint, ambient glow of the distant highway signs to illuminate the corridor.

"Williams! Status!" Elena shouted over the ringing in her ears, her voice sharp and controlled despite the adrenaline hammering in her chest.

"I'm good!" Williams yelled back from near the stairwell, keeping the captive Miller pinned to the deck with a heavy boot. "That sniper is using suppressed heavy grain! Standard ballistic vests won't stop a round from that distance if it hits center mass. We can't stay on this rail!"

"We're moving inside Room 412," Elena decided instantly. She reached down, grabbed Clara by the arm, and hauled her upright. "Clara, give me the bag. Move!"

Clara stumbled forward, clutching the heavy black nylon against her stomach before reluctantly letting Elena sling it over one shoulder. Elena kicked hard against the wooden door of Room 412. The latch, already weakened from the initial struggle earlier that evening, gave way with a splintering crash, swinging wide into the unlit motel room.

"In! Go!" Elena barked, pushing Clara through the threshold before sweeping her weapon across the dark interior space.

The room smelled of stale bleach, cheap tobacco, and damp carpet. A rumpled double bed sat against the far wall, flanked by a single nightstand and a small window overlooking the rear alleyway.

Williams dragged Miller backward into the room, kicking the door shut behind them and throwing the heavy deadbolt with a metallic clack. He immediately positioned himself beside the wooden doorframe, his service weapon raised. "They're crossing the lot. I heard boots on the bottom of the exterior stairs. There's at least three of them."

"They aren't here to arrest us," Miller said, his voice shaking violently as he slumped against the cheap wood paneling of the wall. He pulled his zip-tied wrists up in front of his chest. "They're here to sanitize the whole floor. If they find that ledger in your hand, they'll burn this entire motel to the ground with everyone inside."

Elena ignored him. She crossed the small room in three swift strides and threw open the rear window. The alleyway below was dark, narrow, and flanked by a towering concrete retaining wall. It was a dead end, but it offered cover from the sniper across the parking lot.

"Clara, listen to me," Elena said, turning back to the terrified woman. "You need to climb out this window right now, drop into the alley, and run toward the service station down the road. Hide in the washrooms until state troopers arrive."

"What about you?" Clara asked, her voice cracking as she stared at the heavy black travel bag slung over Elena's shoulder. "You're taking the ledger with you?"

"I'm taking it as bait," Elena said grimly, her eyes locking onto the heavy wooden door as a sharp, rhythmic pounding echoed from the hallway outside.
