Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Bag

Elena pressed her knee deeper into the suspect’s spine as the man strained against her grip, cursing under his breath. The frantic woman in the plaid flannel shirt backed away until her shoulders hit the rusted metal railing of the second-floor walkway, clutching the black travel bag as if it were tethered to her very heartbeat. Her chest heaved with ragged breaths, eyes wide and bloodshot from terror.

"Stay down," Elena commanded the man beneath her, keeping her voice entirely level. She glanced up at the trembling woman. "Are you hurt? Give me your name."

"My name is Clara," the woman whispered, her voice cracking violently. "And you have no idea what you just opened up. You need to let him go. If he doesn't get that bag back, my brother is dead."

Before Elena could process the warning, heavy footsteps pounded up the exterior metal staircase. Agent Marcus Williams rounded the corner of the landing, his service weapon drawn and ready, his breath pluming in the chilly night air. He took in the scene in a fraction of a second—Elena pinning the bearded man, Clara hyperventilating against the railing, and the oversized black travel bag resting heavily on the concrete between them.

"Got him," Williams said, stepping forward to secure the suspect with heavy plastic zip-ties. "Car is idling by the ice machine. Who's the civilian?"

"She says her brother is leverage," Elena replied, rising smoothly from the concrete while keeping her hand near her firearm. She looked down at the suspect as Williams hoisted him roughly to his feet. The man’s baseball cap had fallen off, revealing a sharp, cruel scar tracking across his scalp.

Clara clutched the travel bag tighter, her knuckles stark white against the dark nylon. "You think you saved me," she said bitterly, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her face. "You just put a target on every single person in this zip code. That bag doesn't contain money or drugs. It contains the ledger."

"What ledger, Clara?" Elena asked, stepping closer with calm authority.

"The offshore routing numbers for every crooked politician and federal handler funding the syndicate that destroyed my family," Clara hissed, her eyes darting nervously toward the dark parking lot below. "And right now, the man who sent him isn't even the scariest person on this property."

Williams shoved the struggling suspect toward the stairs, but the man suddenly stopped, flashing a cold, knowing smirk. "Check your comms, Agent Vance," the suspect laughed softly. "Your backup just went radio silent."
