Chapter 12 - Into the Pipe

Elena didn't waste another second. She dropped to her knees, plunged into the dark, echoing concrete mouth of the drainage pipe, and began crawling rapidly through the shallow, rushing rainwater. The air inside tasted of rusted iron, damp earth, and stagnant grease. Behind her, the sharp concussive boom of a flashbang grenade detonated at the entrance of the culvert, filling the subterranean tunnel with a blinding white shockwave and a deafening, high-pitched whine.

"Williams!" Elena shouted into the darkness, pausing for a fraction of a second as her elbows scraped against the abrasive concrete floor.

No answer came back from the opening, only the dull, rapid pop of small arms fire and the heavy boots of the tactical team swarming the drainage basin.

Elena's heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but she forced herself to keep moving, her fingers and knees pushing through the cold sludge. The solid-state hard drive and the leather-bound journal pressed heavily against her chest inside her jacket pocket, a physical reminder of the monumental stakes resting entirely on her survival.

After what felt like hours of agonizing crawling through the pitch-black labyrinth, a faint, pale line of gray light appeared ahead. The tunnel was sloping upward.

With a final surge of adrenaline, Elena scrambled forward, bursting out from the narrow pipe opening into a overgrown municipal drainage ditch surrounded by thick briars and tall weeping willows. The rain was still falling, washing clean the mud from her face as she hauled herself up the grassy embankment.

Across a two-lane suburban road, the familiar flashing red and blue lights of a state police cruiser illuminated the wet asphalt.

Elena didn't hesitate. She sprinted across the slick grass, leaping over a low wooden fence and stumbling onto the shoulder of the road just as the state cruiser slowed to a halt. The driver's side door swung open, and a middle-aged state trooper stepped out with his hand resting cautiously on his holster.

"Freeze! Stay where you are—hands where I can see them!" the trooper ordered, his eyes widening as he took in Elena's mud-soaked clothes, the tactical gear, and the badge she flashed in the dim light.

"Federal Agent Elena Vance, badge number four-zero-eight-two," Elena said, her voice commanding absolute authority despite her exhausted state. "I need an immediate secure uplink to state police dispatch and a priority unit sent to the roadside motel off Interstate ninety-four. Agent Williams is pinned down by hostile federal contractors."

The trooper stared at her badge, his hand dropping from his holster as he reached instantly for his shoulder radio. "Copy that, Agent Vance. Get in the cruiser. Backup is already rolling toward the motel sector."

As Elena slid into the passenger seat of the cruiser, she pulled the solid-state hard drive from her jacket pocket. But as the dashboard illumination hit the device, her blood ran cold. The matte-black casing of the drive was cracked down the middle, and a faint, sweet-smelling chemical vapor was curling off the internal circuit board.
