Chapter 6

The parking lot dissolved into a blur of flying mud, frantic shouts, and the heavy pounding of rain. Chloe’s bat connected with a dull thud against Biker 2’s thigh, dropping him to one knee with a sharp cry of pain. But the momentum threw her off balance, and she tumbled sideways into the muddy gravel, scraping her palms raw.

Across the lot, Julian was locked in a brutal grapple with the massive scarred brute. Despite his injuries and broken ribs, Julian used his opponent’s own weight against him, twisting the brute’s arm behind his back and slamming him against the side of the blue motorcycle. The custom machine rocked precariously on its kickstand, but Julian threw his own body over the gas tank, shielding the bike with his torso as Frank staggered back to his feet, cursing obscenely.

"Get off him!" Chloe yelled, scrambling back to her feet with tears of frustration and adrenaline burning in her eyes. She gripped the wooden bat again, her yellow shirt now stained dark with mud and rainwater. She didn't hesitate; she rushed forward and slammed the flat end of the bat into the side of Frank’s knee, buckling his stance just as he raised a heavy fist toward Julian’s head.

Frank howled, collapsing onto the wet ground. The sheer audacity of the pale waitress fighting back seemed to rattle the bikers more than Julian's desperate defense. They were hardened men accustomed to terrified victims, not cornered fighters who refused to break.

Julian panted heavily, blood dripping from his nose onto the pristine blue paint of the gas tank. He looked at Chloe, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and desperate urgency. "Chloe... the diner door. Unlock it from the inside. We need to fall back."

"I'm not leaving you out here!" she shouted over the roar of thunder rolling across the highway.

"We can't win a war out here in the open!" Julian insisted, coughing violently as a fresh wave of pain radiated through his cracked ribs. "Fall back inside. Now!"

Biker 3 struggled up from the mud, his scarred face twisted into a mask of pure malice. He spat a mouthful of bloody rainwater onto the gravel and lunged toward them with terrifying speed, ignoring his minor injuries.

Realizing they had mere seconds before the brute closed the distance, Chloe spun around, her sneakers skidding in the mud, and sprinted toward the diner door. She reached the threshold, slammed her hand against the panic bar, and threw the heavy glass door wide open.

"Julian, come on!" she screamed into the stormy night.
