Chapter 1

The wet asphalt of the parking lot mirrored the harsh electric buzz of the diner’s failing neon sign, casting an unnatural turquoise hue over the scene. Rain tapped a steady, nervous rhythm against the metal roof of the roadside greasy spoon, a sound that Chloe had grown to hate during her endless double shifts. She stood in her yellow work shirt and damp apron, her pale skin looking almost translucent under the flickering lights. Her messy light brown hair clung to her damp forehead, framing wide, terrified eyes that betrayed the absolute trembling of her core. In her hands, she gripped a heavy wooden baseball bat with white-knuckled desperation, holding it out like a frail shield against the encroaching tide of midnight trouble.
Just a few feet away, three men blocked the only exit from the gravel lot. Biker 1, a tall, tattooed, bald white man with a sharp goatee and a menacing smirk, held a heavy pair of wire cutters that clicked rhythmically in his calloused hand. Biker 2, a weathered middle-aged man with dark hair, a thick beard, and a sleeveless denim vest, stood poised with a greasy motorcycle part tucked under his arm like a blunt weapon. Biker 3, an absolute wall of muscle with a heavy beard and a jagged scar slicing down his left cheek, slowly stepped out from the diner's screen door, blocking the path back inside.
Between them and Chloe sat the core of the conflict: a pristine, deep-blue motorcycle resting quietly on its kickstand under the buzzing neon glow. It didn't belong to the diner, nor did it belong to the menacing trio who had rolled in out of the storm ten minutes prior, demanding tools and access. It belonged to a quiet, battered stranger currently slumped inside the diner's locked booth.
"Get away from that bike!" Chloe shouted, her voice cracking slightly under the weight of her adrenaline, yet holding a fierce, protective resonance that echoed in the empty lot. She didn't know the owner of the blue machine, other than that he had limped inside an hour ago, ordered black coffee, and quietly wept into his ceramic mug before collapsing from exhaustion and untreated wounds. She only knew that these men wanted to strip it, steal it, or destroy it.

Biker 1 chuckled, a low, gravelly sound that cut through the hiss of the falling rain. He stepped closer, the wire cutters catching the neon light. "Little girl, you don't know what you're standing in front of. Move the bat."
Chloe swallowed hard, feeling the cool night air freeze the sweat on the back of her neck. She planted her sneakers firmly into the mud, refusing to yield an inch of ground.
