Chapter 4

Julian stepped out onto the threshold, his movements slow, stiff, and agonizingly deliberate. He wore a dark leather jacket over a torn gray t-shirt, dried blood crusted along his hairline and down the side of his jaw. Despite his battered appearance, there was a steady, resolute fire in his dark eyes that commanded an immediate silence in the wet parking lot. He leaned his weight heavily against the doorframe, one hand pressed hard against his ribs to suppress a wince.

"Leave her alone," Julian said. His voice was a raspy, tobacco-stained baritone that sounded like grinding stones, yet it carried an authority that made all three bikers freeze.

Frank rubbed his bruised forearm, glaring past Chloe at the newcomer. "Well, look who decided to crawl out of the grease. We thought you bled out three miles back, Julian."

"I'm harder to kill than you think, Frank," Julian replied, his breathing shallow and controlled. He pushed himself away from the frame and took two steps forward onto the gravel, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Chloe.

Chloe glanced sideways at him, her chest heaving, the baseball bat still gripped tightly in her right hand. "You shouldn't be out here," she whispered, her voice laced with genuine concern. "You can barely stand."

"I can't let you fight my battles," Julian muttered softly back, not taking his eyes off the three menacing figures. He raised his chin, facing Frank, the scarred brute, and the middle-aged biker with a quiet dignity that defied his battered physical state. "The package isn't on the bike, Frank. You know it, and I know it. It's safe where you can't reach it."

Frank sneered, stepping closer, though he kept a wary eye on the wooden bat still held by the pale, determined girl. "You think you're clever, hiding it in the engine block casing. But we have time, Julian. The storm has washed out the highway in both directions. Nobody's coming down this stretch of Route 9 until morning. We can take our time getting it out of you—or out of her."

At the mention of the highway being closed, a heavy drop of realization settled in Chloe’s stomach. They were trapped here. No police, no passing trucks, no rescue. Just an isolated diner, a flickering neon sign, and three violent men who wanted whatever secret was buried inside Julian's machine.

Julian didn't flinch. Instead, a grim, humorless smile touched the corner of his bruised mouth. "The highway might be blocked, Frank, but you underestimate what people do when they're pushed into a corner."
