Chapter 5

The tension in the rain-slicked parking lot stretched like a pulled wire, ready to snap at the slightest provocation. Frank looked from Julian’s defiant stance to Chloe’s unwavering grip on the baseball bat, weighing his options. The brute with the facial scar, Biker 3, took a heavy step forward, his knuckles cracking loudly in the damp air.
"Boss," Biker 3 grunted, his voice like grinding rocks. "Let me break the bike first. Send a message."
"No," Julian said sharply, stepping slightly in front of Chloe as if to shield her from the impending violence. "The machine stays untouched. If you want what's inside, you deal with me. But let the girl go inside. She has nothing to do with this."
Chloe immediately shook her head, her messy brown hair whipping against her damp cheeks. "I'm not going anywhere. We stay together."
Julian looked down at her in surprise, a flicker of genuine human warmth breaking through the hard, defensive shell of his demeanor. In his line of work, trust was a luxury traded for survival, a commodity he hadn't experienced in years. Yet here stood a teenager in a yellow work shirt, risking her life for a total stranger simply because it was the right thing to do.
Frank chuckled darkly, shaking his head. "How touching. A regular modern tragedy. Well, Julian, since you're feeling so generous with your health, let's see how much of a beating you can take before you hand over the access codes."
Before Frank could lunge, the flickering neon sign above them let out a loud, electrical pop, showering the gravel with a cascade of blue sparks. The sudden darkness plunged the parking lot into deep shadows, illuminated only by the occasional flash of distant lightning. In the split second of blinding white light, Julian moved with shocking, desperate speed. He grabbed the heavy metal motorcycle part that Biker 2 had dropped in the mud, hoisting it up with a grunt of pure agony and swinging it hard toward Frank’s chest.

The heavy steel caught Frank squarely in the ribs, sending him crashing backward into the side of a rusted pickup truck parked near the dumpster. The metal groaned under the impact. Biker 2 roared in fury and lunged forward, while the massive scarred brute charged straight for Julian.
"Get back!" Chloe screamed, swinging her baseball bat with all the remaining strength in her small frame, aiming directly for Biker 2’s knees as the chaotic brawl erupted in the stormy dark.
