Chapter 9: The Arrival of the Detective

Heavy pounding on the front exterior doors reverberated through the study walls, shattering the tense silence between Rohesen and Clara. Before Rohesen could move toward the door, the heavy oak panels flew open, driven by a powerful kick from the hallway. Detective Marcus Vance strode into the room, his hand resting near his service weapon, flanked by two armed patrol officers.

Vance took in the scene instantly: Rohesen standing pale and trembling against the open wall cavity holding the black hard drive, and Clara seated calmly in the leather armchair with an expression of serene innocence.

"Drop the drive, Mr. Vance," Vance ordered sharply, his eyes locking onto Rohesen. "Put your hands where I can see them."

"Detective, you don't understand!" Rohesen yelled, stepping forward, thrusting the hard drive outward. "She did it! Clara isn't a maid—she’s Arthur Sterling’s daughter! She planted this server, she poisoned my coffee, she framed both Eleanor and me to destroy what’s left of my company!"

Vance didn't flinch. He gestured to the two officers, who immediately moved in, grabbing Rohesen’s arms and wrenching the hard drive from his grip, forcing him down against the desk.

"Mr. Vance, your wife already gave us a very comprehensive statement at the precinct," Vance said coldly as the steel cuffs clicked around Rohesen’s wrists. "She detailed your offshore holding accounts, your forged asset transfers, and the systemic financial fraud you've been running for the past five years. We searched the secondary server in the basement matching her instructions, and every single transaction checks out."

"Eleanor was trying to help me!" Rohesen shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as they hauled him toward the door. "Look at the hard drive in my hand! Look at the label! She set this entire thing up to frame us both!"

Clara stood up slowly from the leather armchair, smoothing down the front of her blue maid uniform with delicate precision. She looked at Detective Vance with wide, moisture-filled eyes that instantly mirrored the hysterical maid from the dining room earlier that evening.

"Detective, he’s delusional," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly, injecting just the right amount of fragile distress into her tone. "He’s been acting paranoid for weeks. He accused Mrs. Vance of trying to poison him at dinner, and then he dragged me in here threatening me when I tried to stop him from destroying the evidence."

Vance looked at Clara with a sympathetic nod before turning back to Rohesen. "Mr. Vance, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As they dragged him out past the grand staircase and through the heavy front doors into the flashing red glare of the police cruisers, Rohesen caught one final glimpse of Clara standing in the foyer doorway, watching him vanish into the night with a smile that promised absolute, unyielding vengeance.
