Chapter 12: The Bargain in the Dark

Arthur Sterling stared at Eleanor across the laminate table for a long, agonizing minute. The professional mask of the dispassionate public defender had slipped, revealing the exhausted, driven man beneath—a son who had watched his family disintegrate a decade ago and had spent ten years planning a methodical, surgical dismantling of the man responsible.

"You always were the brains of the Vance enterprise, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said quietly, his voice losing its formal edge. "Rohesen provided the ruthless ambition, but you managed the risk. Unfortunately, you didn't manage it well enough to protect him from his own history."

"We aren't asking for pity, Mr. Sterling," Eleanor replied, her tone unwavering. "We are offering a settlement. You wanted justice for your father. You wanted to expose the fraudulent asset stripping that destroyed Sterling Engineering. You've done that. The world now knows what Rohesen did ten years ago."

Rohesen turned his head to look at his wife, opening his mouth to object, but a single glance from Eleanor silenced him instantly. He slumped back into his chair, the reality of his downfall finally crushing the last remnants of his pride.

"And what do you propose to do with that Zurich metadata?" Arthur asked, narrowing his eyes. "If I walk out of here and file those server logs with the judge, the entire case against you collapses, but my sister’s involvement in planting the physical evidence comes to light. Clara faces felony charges for obstruction of justice and evidence tampering."

"We don't want Clara in prison," Eleanor said softly, surprising both men in the room. "We want the truth exposed, but we also want an end to this cycle of destruction. If you use those Zurich logs to clear our names of the attempted murder charge, Rohesen will plead guilty to the historic financial infractions regarding Sterling Engineering. He will surrender his remaining corporate assets to establish a restitution fund for your family and the former employees."

Arthur blinked, caught entirely off guard by the magnanimity of the offer. "You're willing to surrender your entire fortune?"

"Money is replaceable, Mr. Sterling," Eleanor said, looking down at her hands. "Freedom and a clear conscience are not. Rohesen built his empire on sand, and it deserves to wash away. But I will not spend the rest of my life in a cell for a crime neither of us committed tonight."

Arthur sat in silence, weighing the proposal. He looked from Eleanor to Rohesen, seeing a man completely broken and a woman willing to sacrifice everything to salvage whatever dignity remained of their lives.

"I'll have the Zurich metadata filed under seal with the district attorney's office by midnight," Arthur said finally, standing up and latching his briefcase. "The attempted murder charges will be dropped due to insufficient corroborating evidence. But the financial restitution hearings begin on Tuesday."
