Chapter 15: The Final Departure

The moving van rumbled down the long gravel driveway, its heavy diesel engine echoing through the trees as it headed toward the main highway, carrying the last remnants of their former life away into the distance.

Rohesen stood by the passenger side of their modest sedan, tossing his car keys lightly in his hand. He wore a simple blue cotton shirt and worn jeans, his appearance completely transformed from the tense, tuxedo-clad executive who had sat at the dining table weeks ago.

Eleanor walked out from the front porch for one final inspection of the empty house. The heavy oak doors stood wide open, welcoming the fresh breeze through the grand foyer where Clara had once stood crying in her blue maid uniform. The dining room was silent, the polished mahogany table reflecting the empty sunlight streaming through the tall glass windows. There were no syringes taped to chair legs, no hidden servers in the walls, and no ghosts lurking in the corners.

She stepped back onto the gravel path, closing the front door behind her with a soft, final click. She didn't lock it; she simply left it ready for whatever new family or new chapter the future might bring to its halls.

Rohesen opened the passenger door for her, his movements natural, unhurried, and grounded in reality. Eleanor slid into the seat, looking over at him with a quiet, peaceful expression.

"Ready?" Rohesen asked softly.

"Always," Eleanor replied.

Rohesen walked around to the driver's side, climbed in, and started the ignition. The engine hummed smoothly as he put the car into drive. He checked his rearview mirror one last time, watching the grand estate shrink in the distance until it vanished completely behind a bend in the tree-lined road.

They drove away into the bright afternoon sun, leaving behind the dark maroon dresses, the blue glowing lights, the bitter betrayals, and the heavy burden of manufactured perfection. Ahead of them lay an open road, an unwritten future, and the hard-won peace of absolute truth.
