Chapter 8: The True Mastermind

Rohesen stepped back until his spine pressed hard against the exposed server rack inside the wall cavity. The hard drive felt heavy and cold in his hands. "You," he whispered, the single word scraping against his dry throat. "It was you all along. Not Eleanor."
Clara stepped fully into the study, closing the heavy oak door behind her with a soft, deliberate click. She walked over to the leather armchair, running her fingers lightly over the maroon leather before taking a seat, crossing one leg neatly over the other.
"Eleanor was an obstacle, Rohesen," Clara said smoothly, her voice carrying a chilling urban sophistication that completely erased the humble maid persona she had maintained for two years. "A brilliant, observant obstacle who figured out what I was doing to your coffee months ago. She tried to detoxify you behind my back, and she kept that syringe downstairs as a fail-safe to trap me if I ever made a premature move."
"Why?" Rohesen’s voice broke, the shock finally giving way to a burning, impotent fury. "I hired you. I gave you a roof over your head, a salary, a position in this estate."
"You ruined my father, Rohesen," Clara said, her voice hardening, the casual warmth evaporating into pure ice. "Ten years ago, you engineered a hostile corporate takeover of my family’s manufacturing firm. You stripped the pension funds, drove my father to a catastrophic stroke, and left my family destitute while you sat in your ivory tower sipping scotch and buying black tuxedos for dinner parties where you pretended to be a philanthropist."
Rohesen stared at her, his mind racing backward through a decade of ruthless business acquisitions, trying to attach a face to the name of every casualty left in his wake. "Your father... Arthur Sterling?"
"Sterling Engineering," Clara finished for him, a bitter smile touching her lips. "You didn't even remember his name, did you? To you, we were just numbers on a balance sheet to be erased. So I took my time. I learned your habits, I studied your security systems, I secured employment in your household under an assumed identity, and I systematically dismantled your life piece by piece."
"The police are already looking at the evidence," Rohesen bluffed, tightening his grip on the hard drive. "Detective Vance knows about the offshore accounts. They'll be here any minute."

Clara let out a low, cold laugh. "Detective Vance is currently following a trail of fabricated shell corporation documents that lead straight to Eleanor’s personal offshore accounts—accounts I opened using forged signatures on stolen stationery from her private desk. By the time the police realize they’ve been chasing a ghost, you and your wife will both be sitting in a maximum-security prison for mutual conspiracy to commit murder and corporate fraud."
Rohesen realized with sudden, terrifying clarity that there was no escape. The trap had not been set for him tonight; it had been designed to seal both him and Eleanor inside a concrete vault of inescapable ruin.
