Chapter 6

The rain had lessened to a misty drizzle by the time Elena and David approached the state line checkpoint, but the tension inside the sedan remained suffocating. David had swapped his pickup for a nondescript rental car behind the diner, and they were now traveling in a two-vehicle convoy to avoid drawing suspicion. Elena glanced in her rearview mirror every few seconds, her eyes scanning the dark ribbon of highway behind them. Suddenly, a pair of high-intensity LED headlights crested the hill far back, closing the distance at an alarming speed. It was a late-model black SUV with tinted windows—the exact signature vehicle of Julian’s private tactical unit.
"David, we've got company," Elena spoke into the hands-free communicator linking their vehicles. David’s voice crackled back instantly, calm and calculating. "Keep your speed steady. Don't panic. Take the upcoming exit for Route 9 toward the industrial park. We can lose them in the maze of shipping warehouses." Elena signaled smoothly, navigating the heavy sedan off the highway and onto the dark, winding access road. The black SUV followed closely, its high beams flashing a blinding warning demanding they pull over. Clara woke up, rubbing her eyes and whimpering at the harsh glare piercing the rear window.

"Mommy, what's happening?" Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly as she clutched her stuffed rabbit. Elena kept her eyes fixed on the wet asphalt ahead, trying to keep her tone steady to reassure her daughter. "Everything is fine, sweetheart. Just closing our eyes for a little game of hide-and-seek," Elena replied, downshifting as she rounded a sharp corner between two massive logistics distribution centers. The labyrinth of loading docks and towering shipping containers created a complex maze of shadows and dead ends. David’s rental car peeled off down a side alley, drawing the pursuers' attention for a split second.
Elena killed her headlights and coasted into a darkened loading bay beneath an overhanging metal awning, cutting the engine entirely. The car plunged into absolute silence and darkness. A few seconds later, the roar of the black SUV’s engine echoed off the concrete walls as it swept past their hiding spot, its tires hissing on the damp pavement. Elena let out a long, shuddering breath she didn't realize she had been holding. Through the windshield, she watched the red taillights of the SUV disappear around the far corner of the warehouse. They had bought themselves a precious window of time, but the net was closing in fast.
