Chapter 2

The private elevator descent to the basement archive felt agonizingly slow. Elena clutched the small leather wallet Julian had dropped during the scuffle, its worn brass clasp holding more power than any weapon in the ballroom above. Beside her, Margaret maintained a composed silence, her silver-white hair perfectly styled despite the chaos upstairs. They exited into a subterranean corridor lined with climate-controlled vaults where Vance Industries stored decades of digital history. Elena swiped her master security badge, the green LED light blinking rhythmically to grant them entry into the central monitoring hub.

Inside, rows of server racks hummed with a low, menacing resonance. Elena immediately sat at the primary console, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard to access the ballroom camera logs. The high-definition footage materialized on the dual monitors with startling clarity. Every detail of Julian’s assault on Clara was rendered in sharp contrast: the brutal shove, the child's small head striking the edge of the marble pedestal, and Julian’s callous dismissal. Margaret stood behind her, watching the screen with a heavy sigh that carried the weight of decades of loyalty and disappointment. "He was always reckless, Elena, but striking a child crosses a line even he should not have survived," Margaret murmured softly.

Elena imported the video file into an encrypted, multi-location cloud backup, ensuring that no corporate firewall or paid hacker could scrub the evidence. But the wallet in her pocket held an even more damning secret. Opening it with trembling fingers, she extracted a hidden microSD card tucked behind the driver's license compartment. She inserted the tiny chip into her workstation. Files populated the screen—shell company registries, forged signatures, and transfer receipts implicating not just Julian, but the entire executive board in a multi-million-dollar pension fund heist. Clara’s medical emergency had merely been the catalyst that brought this hidden corruption crashing into the open.

As the download progress bar inched toward completion, a sharp alarm chimed from the facility entrance upstairs. Someone was overriding the biometric locks on the sub-level stairwell. Julian’s private security detail was already moving to cut the power and confiscate the drives. Elena pulled the microSD card from the port and slipped it into the inner lining of her gown. She looked at Margaret, whose eyes reflected quiet determination rather than fear. "They think they can bury this in the dark," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute. "They forgot who built these archives in the first place."
