Chapter 5

Inside the dim confines of the sedan, the glow of David’s laptop screen cast long, sharp shadows across his weathered face. He inserted the microSD card into a compact card reader, his seasoned fingers immediately bypassing the basic directory structures to unearth the encrypted database files. Elena watched him anxiously, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, the torn fabric of her formal gown a stark reminder of the violence they had fled just hours earlier. Clara stirred in the back seat, whimpering softly in her sleep, and Elena reached back to stroke the little girl's blond hair until her breathing steadied again.
David muttered under his breath as lines of complex financial transactions scrolled across the monitor at blinding speed. "This isn't just embezzlement, Elena," David whispered, his eyes widening behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "This is a systemic liquidation of the municipal pension funds. Julian has been using shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands to siphon fifty million dollars earmarked for retired teachers and first responders. If these records go public, the entire board goes down for federal racketeering." He looked over at Elena, his expression a mixture of grim satisfaction and profound sorrow. "He was planning to pin the whole thing on you if the audit hit."

Elena felt a cold chill wash over her. It all made horrifying sense now. Julian had systematically positioned her as the primary signatory on several high-risk corporate subsidiaries over the past two years under the guise of estate planning. If the federal authorities had audited Vance Industries without this insider evidence, she would have taken the fall while Julian fled to a non-extradition country with the stolen billions. "He calculated every move, David. Even inviting us to that gala tonight was a public relations stunt to establish our presence before he executed the final transfer," Elena said, her voice hard as steel.
David pulled a secure external drive from his pocket and mirrored the files onto his own device, creating a redundant copy that could not be remotely wiped. "We need to take this directly to the Department of Justice’s elite financial crimes unit in Washington, bypassing local authorities who are entirely on Julian’s payroll," David advised, powering down the laptop with a definitive click. "I have a contact in the federal prosecutor's office who can't be bought. But we need to move before dawn. Julian’s private security will track your car's GPS within the hour." Elena nodded, put the sedan in gear, and pulled out of the gravel lot into the storm.
