Chapter 3

The heavy steel security door of the archive room groaned as an override code was punched into the exterior keypad. Margaret stepped toward the emergency manual release lever, her movements deliberate and calm despite her advanced years. "Go through the maintenance tunnel, Elena," Margaret instructed, her voice laced with an unyielding authority born from a lifetime of surviving high-society cutthroats. "I will delay them. They still respect my seniority, or at least they fear the scandal of touching me in public." Elena hesitated, her hand gripping the cold metal of the tunnel hatch. She refused to abandon her mentor to Julian's ruthless mercenaries.
"We go together, Margaret. Clara is waiting in the secure car with the driver," Elena insisted, refusing to budge. Margaret offered a rare, melancholic smile, adjusting the lapels of her beige coat over her black evening dress. "Clara needs her mother to be free, not hunted. Use the evidence, Elena. Expose them all." With a firm shove, Margaret pushed Elena through the low-hanging hatch of the ventilation shaft before slamming the heavy iron door shut and sliding the deadbolt into place from the outside. The hollow sound of the lock echoing in the confined space sealed their temporary parting.

Crawling through the narrow metal conduit, Elena choked down the dust and the rising panic in her chest. Every second spent in the dark crawlspace felt like an eternity. Below her, muffled voices resonated through the vents—Julian’s chief enforcer demanding access to the terminal, and Margaret’s unflinching refusal. Elena kept moving, guided only by the dim red glow of emergency exit indicators spaced far apart in the labyrinthine infrastructure of the estate. Her cream-colored gown tore against a sharp rivet, but she ignored the fabric ripping, focusing solely on the survival of her daughter and the imminent downfall of the man who had tried to destroy them.
She emerged into the subterranean parking garage, the cool night air hitting her face like a physical blow. The sleek black sedan idling near the exit ramp caught her eye. Inside, Clara was resting quietly against the leather seat, her forehead bandaged neatly, her breathing slow and even. The loyal family driver nodded respectfully as Elena wrenched open the rear door and pulled her daughter into a fierce, protective embrace. Clara stirred, looking up with wide, trusting eyes. "Are we safe now, Mommy?" the little girl whispered softly. Elena kissed the uninjured side of Clara’s forehead, starting the engine as the garage alarms began to wail overhead.
