Chapter 9 - The Hidden Compartment

The private study behind the main library smelled of old leather, pipe tobacco, and decades of hidden secrets. The grand mahogany desk sat untouched in the center of the room, illuminated by a single green-shaded desk lamp that cast long, dramatic shadows across the book-lined walls.

Arthur gently laid Maya down on the leather Chesterfield sofa, pulling a heavy wool throw blanket over her small shoulders. Within seconds, the exhausted little girl was fast asleep, her breathing deep and even.

Julian stood by the heavy oak door, keeping watch while Arthur approached the floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves on the eastern wall.

"Are you certain the secondary mechanism is behind this section?" Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "The blueprints from nineteen-eighty didn't show any sub-floor vaults in this wing."

"My father built this room himself after the first audit," Arthur replied, his fingers tracing the carved spine of an antique leather-bound encyclopedia set. "He trusted no one—not his partners, not his lawyers, and certainly not his successors. He left a physical key encoded into the binding of volume four."

Arthur pulled the heavy book forward. With a satisfying, mechanical clack, a hidden spring released, and a narrow section of the bookshelf slid smoothly inward, revealing a dark, recessed compartment built directly into the exterior stone foundation of the mansion.

Inside the dark alcove sat a small, fireproof steel lockbox bearing the private crest of the Vance Shipping Trust—the exact crest that had been stamped on the sepia-toned photograph Maya had clutched in the ballroom.

Arthur reached inside, pulled the heavy steel box out, and placed it carefully on the center of the mahogany desk.

Julian stepped closer, his eyes widening as he read the handwritten label taped to the top of the box. To be opened only in the event of total institutional failure. — V.V.

"V.V.," Julian muttered, his breath catching in his throat. "That doesn't stand for Victoria Vance, does it?"

Arthur’s hands trembled slightly as he picked up the small brass key that had been tucked behind the encyclopedia volume. He slid it into the lock and turned it. The mechanism gave a heavy, echoing snap.
