Chapter 13 - The Living Ghost

The interior of the coastal ruin was an architectural illusion. While the exterior facade remained a blackened, crumbling shell of stone and soot, the inner core of the mansion had been completely rebuilt into a modern, high-tech bunker lined with mahogany paneling and glowing server racks.
Arthur and Julian moved silently down the long, carpeted hallway, their footsteps completely muffled by the thick Persian rugs that covered the hardwood floors. At the end of the hall, double doors stood wide open, spilling warm lamplight onto the floor.
An old man sat in a leather wingback chair facing a bank of high-definition monitors displaying real-time security feeds of the grand ballroom back at the main estate. He wore an immaculate black tuxedo identical to Arthur's, his silver hair brushed back neatly, a half-empty glass of vintage champagne resting on the mahogany side table beside him.
"You're late, Arthur," the old man said smoothly without turning around, his voice rich, steady, and terrifyingly familiar. "I expected you the moment Victoria failed to contain the child."
Arthur froze, raising the revolver slightly, though his arm trembled ever so slightly as the old man slowly turned his chair around to face them.
It was a face Arthur hadn't seen in thirty years—a face that was supposed to be resting beneath a marble tombstone fifty miles inland.
"Marcus," Arthur breathed, the name catching in his throat like broken glass. "You survived the fire."
Marcus Vance smiled, taking a slow, calm sip of his champagne. He looked remarkably healthy for a man who had supposedly been dead for three decades, his silver eyes sharp and calculating.
"A well-timed decoy, a paid medical examiner, and a thoroughly burned corpse of an unfortunate vagrant," Marcus said smoothly, gesturing to the empty chair opposite him. "It's amazing what a few million dollars can do when the insurance companies are desperate to close a file."
Julian stepped into the room, staring at the man in the chair with absolute horror. "You... you're my father. You abandoned us all and let everyone believe you were dead?"
May you like
"I didn't abandon anything, Julian," Marcus replied, his smile vanishing into a cold, hard line. "I built the foundation that keeps you all living in luxury. And now, thanks to your foolish incompetence tonight, we have to burn it all down and start over."
