Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Sins

Arthur carefully wiped a layer of thick dust from the leather cover of the journal, his thumb tracing the embossed lettering that seemed to burn under the moonlight. The weight of the book felt heavy in his hands, carrying the tangible evidence of decades of deception, theft, and corporate ruin.
On the floor, Julian held Victoria down with practiced ease, his breathing heavy as he pinned her wrists to the marble tiles. Victoria had stopped thrashing, her chest heaving beneath the ruined gold fabric of her gown, her eyes fixed on the journal in Arthur's hands with sheer, unadulterated terror.
"It's all in here, isn't it?" Arthur asked quietly, flipping open the stiff, yellowed pages. The neat, precise handwriting of his late business partner stared back at him. "Every forged signature, every diverted wire transfer, and the exact ledger entries proving that the fire was deliberately set to cover up the missing capital."
"Burn it, Arthur," Victoria spat, her voice dropping into a hoarse, venomous hiss. "Burn it and pretend none of this ever happened. If that book leaves this room, the entire Vance empire collapses by morning. Thousands of people lose their jobs, their pensions, everything. You'll destroy your own legacy to prove a point?"
"My legacy died the day you murdered my brother's reputation," Arthur replied without looking up from the pages. His voice was steady, stripped of all emotion, carrying the terrifying finality of an executioner's axe. "A name built on lies and stolen lives isn't an empire, Victoria. It's a prison. And we are tearing the walls down tonight."
Maya slid down from Arthur's side, walking cautiously over to the fallen silver poker and nudging it away with her shiny black patent-leather shoe. She looked down at Victoria with a solemn, mature gaze that felt far too heavy for a seven-year-old girl.
"You shouldn't have locked me in the dark closet," Maya said softly. "Grandpa always finds the bad people."
Before Victoria could snap a venomous retort, the heavy wrought-iron doors of the conservatory swung violently open. The bright, harsh beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the dim room, followed by the heavy, synchronized boots of federal marshals in tactical gear.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a sharp voice commanded, echoing off the glass ceiling.

Julian slowly raised his hands, stepping back from Victoria while keeping a watchful eye on her. "Over here, Captain. We have the primary suspect, and the missing ledger has been recovered."
