Chapter 12 - The Ashes of the Past

The coastal estate had been a jagged ruin of blackened timber and overgrown ivy for thirty years, a forbidden scar on the edge of the jagged cliffs overlooking the dark, churning Pacific Ocean. According to every municipal record, public archive, and insurance assessment, the property had been abandoned and condemned after the devastating fire that claimed the main house and nearly the entire Vance family archive.

Yet, as the heavy black town car cut through the dense coastal fog, the headlights illuminated something impossible: a faint, warm glow of electric light filtering through the second-floor windows of what was supposed to be a hollow ruin.

Arthur sat in the back seat, holding a sleeping Maya wrapped securely in the wool blanket. Julian drove in grim silence, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, his eyes locked on the narrow, winding dirt road that led up to the cliffside gates.

"The gates are open," Julian whispered, pulling the car to a smooth halt just inside the rusted wrought-iron perimeter. "There's a modern generator running behind the foundation wall. Someone has been living here, maintaining the infrastructure in secret."

Arthur gently handed Maya over to Julian, who took the sleeping child with surprising gentleness, cradling her against his chest.

"Stay in the car, Julian," Arthur ordered, reaching into his tuxedo jacket and pulling out a heavy, steel-barreled revolver that hadn't seen the light of day since his corporate security days in the nineties. "If I'm not back out through those doors in twenty minutes, call the federal marshals and tell them to bring heavy equipment."

"I'm coming with you, Arthur," Julian insisted, shifting Maya carefully into the back seat and locking the doors from the inside before stepping out into the damp, salt-heavy air. "That's my family's ghost in that house. I need to face him as much as you do."

Arthur didn't argue. He checked the cylinder of the revolver, clicked it shut with a solid, metallic snap, and led the way toward the heavy oak side door of the ruined mansion that hung slightly ajar, welcoming them into the dark interior.

Inside, the smell of damp ash was mixed with the fresh, clean scent of expensive pipe tobacco and burning cedar wood.
