Chapter 6 - The Steel Trap

The air in the conservatory grew suddenly frigid as a gust of midnight wind rattled the overhead glass panes. Arthur didn't flinch; he tightened his grip on Maya, shifting her weight securely onto his hip while his free hand slid slowly into his tuxedo pocket, his fingers brushing against the cold metal of his vintage pocket watch.

"You always did overestimate your influence, Victoria," Arthur said steadily, keeping his voice low and rhythmic to soothe the crying child against his shoulder. "The judges you bought? They were subpoenaed by the federal grand jury forty-eight hours ago. Julian signed the cooperation affidavits this morning."

Victoria’s hand hovered inches from the heavy brass master release lever on the wall. Her golden dress seemed to swallow the dim light as she trembled, the terrifying realization washing over her face in slow, agonizing waves.

"You... you set a trap," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "The party tonight... it was never a celebration."

"It was a gathering of witnesses," Julian replied coldly, stepping another foot closer to her blind side. "Every board member, every major stakeholder, and two federal marshals currently stationed at the front gates. Your phone calls to the offshore accounts were intercepted the moment you dialed."

Maya lifted her head, wiping a tear from her cheek, and pointed directly at the loose stone behind Victoria's elbow. "Grandpa, look. There's another paper behind her hand. The one with the red seal."

Victoria whipped around instinctively, her hand lunging for the crevice in the wall. In that split second of distraction, Julian lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling her away from the master release lever and pinning her arms against the stone floor.

The silver poker skittered across the tiles, coming to rest near Arthur's polished dress shoes.

"Get off me!" Victoria screamed, thrashing wildly beneath Julian's heavy weight, her expensive gold fabric ripping as she fought with the strength of absolute desperation. "You miserable bastards! You'll never take the estate!"

Arthur stepped past them, ignoring the thrashing woman on the floor. He knelt down by the open wall panel, sliding his fingers into the dark, dusty recess where Maya had pointed. His fingertips brushed against a cold, leather-bound journal. He pulled it out into the pale moonlight.
