Chapter 8: The Velvet Trap

The small LED light on the conference room's main media display flashed blue as Arthur Vance connected the encrypted flash drive to the central projection system. Julian Vance shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his hand freezing over the silver fountain pen he had been twirling. "What is this nonsense?" Julian asked, attempting to project an aura of bored amusement, though a bead of sweat now traced a slow path down the side of his neck. "If you think home videos of a shattered picture frame are going to distract the board from your spectacular public meltdown, Evelyn, you are severely mistaken."
Evelyn did not dignify the remark with a response. He simply nodded to Arthur, who pressed play on the console. The high-definition footage of the previous night’s charity gala flickered to life on the massive screen behind the board table. The room watched in absolute stillness as the camera panned across the crowded ballroom, capturing the laughing guests, the warm lighting, and finally, the corner table where the framed acquisition document rested. Julian’s face on the screen was visible, standing partially concealed behind a decorative marble pillar just feet away from the display table.
On the monitor, the video advanced to the critical timestamp. The board members leaned forward collectively, their eyes glued to the display. They watched with mounting disbelief as Julian’s hand slipped out from the shadows, his fingers nudging the heavy wooden frame with calculated precision. The frame tipped over, crashing loudly onto the polished floor right beside little Lily’s white shoes. The recording then captured Julian stepping back into the darkness, a self-satisfied smirk playing across his features just as the chaos erupted and Evelyn rushed forward in a blind rage.
The silence in the boardroom became absolute and suffocating. Several senior board members visibly recoiled, turning their shocked gazes away from the screen to stare directly at Julian. The corporate betrayal was undeniable, blatant, and recorded in unyielding high definition. Clara watched Julian’s facade crumble piece by piece, her expression a mask of cold satisfaction. Grandmother Eleanor leaned heavily on her cane, her voice cutting through the quiet like breaking glass. "It appears, Julian, that the only person who sabotaged our company and terrorized a seven-year-old child for personal gain is sitting right across from us."

Julian stood up abruptly, knocking his leather chair backward against the wood paneling with a sharp thud. "This... this is fabricated!" he stammered, his voice losing its smooth composure and rising in frantic desperation. "It’s a deepfake! Evelyn is framing me to save his own skin!" Arthur Vance calmly reached into his briefcase and slid several printed forensic analysis reports across the table toward the lead independent director. "The digital integrity of the file has been verified by three independent cyber-security firms, Julian," Arthur stated flatly. "There is no doubt. The metadata matches your private access logs and physical location at the gala."
Realizing he was completely cornered, Julian looked around the table, desperately searching for a sympathetic ally, but every face was turned away in disgust. The velvet trap had snapped shut, and the Vance family dynasty had just executed its most ruthless internal purge. Evelyn finally stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with deliberate slowness, looking down at his younger brother with a mixture of pity and absolute authority. "The board meeting is adjourned, Julian," Evelyn said quietly. "Security is waiting for you in the lobby. Don't bother packing your desk."
