Chapter 2: The Silent Witness Above

The lingering silence in the grand ballroom felt heavier than the crystal chandeliers overhead. Evelyn Vance stood frozen, his hand still suspended in the air where he had pointed his finger moments earlier. The blood had entirely drained from his face, leaving his skin a pale, sickly gray against the stark contrast of his black suit and dark bow tie. He stared up at the small dome of the security camera near the exit door, his mind racing to calculate the implications of what that lens had captured. Clara did not look away from him. She kept one hand gently resting on Lily’s blonde hair, shielding the seven-year-old from the prying eyes of the murmuring guests who had begun to whisper among themselves.
Grandmother Eleanor slowly removed her hand from Evelyn’s shoulder, her sharp eyes darting between her son and daughter-in-law. She sensed immediately that this incident was far larger than a misplaced document or a child's alleged wrongdoing. "Clear the room," Eleanor instructed the nearest staff member in a quiet, authoritative tone that brooked no argument. Within minutes, the uncomfortable guests began shuffling toward the grand double doors, casting curious backward glances. Only the immediate family remained standing in the wreckage of the shattered frame. The red ink stain on the paper seemed to mock them from the floor, a vivid splash of crimson against the pale wood.

Evelyn swallowed hard, his throat dry. He attempted to regain his composure, adjusting his bow tie with trembling fingers. "The system was down for maintenance tonight," he lied, though his voice lacked its usual commanding resonance. Clara offered a grim, humorless smile. "Was it, Evelyn? Because the blinking green light up there suggests otherwise." Grandmother Eleanor folded her arms across her blue dress, her pearls catching the dimming light. "Don't insult our intelligence, Evelyn," she said coldly. "If that camera recorded what really happened to the acquisition contract, we need to see it immediately. Let’s go to the security office. Now."
Refusing to meet his mother's stern gaze, Evelyn clenched his jaw tightly. He knew that the digital archives could not be easily manipulated, especially since the security firm reported directly to the corporate board—and, indirectly, to Eleanor herself. Clara knelt down once more to speak gently with Lily, whispering reassurances before handing the weeping child over to a trusted nanny. As the adults turned toward the arched hallway leading to the basement security suite, a heavy sense of dread settled over Evelyn. The meticulously constructed illusion of his flawless life was beginning to fracture, and no amount of wealth or power could glue the pieces back together.
