Chapter 3: Descent Into the Basement

The descent into the Vance estate’s private security office felt like walking into a cold, subterranean vault. The plush carpets of the upper levels gave way to utilitarian concrete flooring, and the ambient temperature dropped noticeably. Evelyn led the way, his leather-soled shoes clicking sharply against the floor, though his usual confident stride had devolved into a rigid, hurried march. Clara walked a few paces behind him, her emerald-green dress sweeping the floor silently. Grandmother Eleanor brought up the rear, leaning slightly on her polished wooden cane, her face an unreadable mask of determination.
Upon entering the dimly lit control room, the hum of mainframe servers filled the air. Rows of high-definition monitors lined the back wall, casting an eerie blue glow over the room's singular occupant, a veteran head of security named Marcus. Marcus spun around in his ergonomic chair, looking surprised to see the family patriarch and matriarch arriving unannounced at midnight. "Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance, Madam Eleanor. Is there a problem upstairs?" Marcus asked, standing up quickly. Evelyn cleared his throat, stepping in front of the console with a manufactured aura of authority. "Everything is under control, Marcus. We just need to verify a glitch with the exit door camera in the ballroom."
Clara stepped past her husband, her posture rigid. "Don't lie to him, Evelyn. We aren't here for a glitch. We need the footage from the past hour regarding the acquisition document incident." Marcus blinked, glancing nervously between Evelyn and Clara. He sat back down at the console, his fingers hovering over the mechanical keyboard. "Well, Mrs. Vance, the main server automatically archives all high-traffic zones, including the ballroom perimeter. If something happened near the exit, it’s definitely logged." Evelyn shot Marcus a warning glare, a silent threat that did not go unnoticed by Grandmother Eleanor.

"Pull up the file, Marcus," Eleanor commanded, her voice echoing softly in the enclosed space. "And do not omit a single second." Marcus nodded, tapping a sequence of keys. A large central monitor flickered, shifting from a live feed of the empty courtyard to the timestamped recording of the ballroom. On the screen, the room was filled with guests in formal attire. The family watched in tense silence as the video progressed toward the exact moment of the commotion. They saw the framed document sliding off the side table—not pushed by little Lily, whose hands were nowhere near it, but nudged deliberately by an entirely different person standing in the shadows.
Clara let out a sharp breath, her worst suspicions confirmed, while Evelyn slumped slightly against the edge of the metal desk. The footage clearly displayed a man in a tailored suit reaching out from behind a pillar, nudging the heavy frame just enough to send it crashing to the floor right beside Lily's white shoes. The camera angle also captured Evelyn’s immediate, explosive reaction, and more damningly, the conspiratorial smirk of the person who actually caused the incident. Grandmother Eleanor leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she recognized the shadowy figure in the background. "Pause the frame," she whispered. "Zoom in on his face."
