Chapter 7: Entering the Lion's Den

The corporate headquarters of Vance Global stood as a monolith of steel and glass in the heart of downtown, its sleek facade reflecting the grey morning clouds. Inside the executive boardroom on the fortieth floor, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The mahogany table, long enough to seat twenty, was lined with senior board members whispering amongst themselves in hushed tones. Julian Vance sat at the far end, looking entirely too comfortable in a bespoke grey suit, casually twirling a silver fountain pen between his fingers. He had spent the last twelve hours basking in the premature glow of victory, certain that his older brother's career was finished.
The double doors at the end of the boardroom clicked open, and all conversation abruptly ceased. Evelyn entered first, walking with a measured, unhurried cadence that commanded the room. He wore a crisp black suit, his posture straight and his expression utterly composed. Behind him walked Clara, wearing a tailored charcoal blazer, followed by Grandmother Eleanor, who leaned on her cane with regal authority. Julian paused his pen-twirling, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed their calm demeanor. He had expected red-eyed panic, defensive excuses, or perhaps an empty seat. Instead, they looked like executioners arriving for an appointment.
"Evelyn. Mother. Clara," Julian greeted smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair with a patronizing smirk. "I am surprised to see you here today, given the unfortunate... public embarrassment your family suffered last night. I assumed you would be spending the morning in damage control." Evelyn took his seat opposite his brother, placing his hands flat on the polished table. "Good morning, Julian. Save your concern. We are here because there is an urgent matter regarding the acquisition contract and the security of this company that requires our immediate attention."

Julian chuckled softly, looking around the table at the other board members. "How typical of my brother to deflect. Ladies and gentlemen, before Evelyn attempts to rewrite history, I formally move that we open the floor to discuss his unstable conduct at the charity gala last night, which resulted in the destruction of confidential documents and public misconduct." Several board members murmured in agreement, shifting uncomfortably in their seats. Julian leaned forward, locking eyes with Evelyn with a triumphant gleam. "You lost control, Evelyn. You blamed a child. You are unfit to lead Vance Global."
Instead of flinching or raising his voice as he had in the ballroom, Evelyn simply smiled—a cold, humorless expression that sent an involuntary shiver down Julian's spine. "Thank you for that impassionated speech, Julian," Evelyn replied calmly. He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out the encrypted flash drive, and placed it gently in the center of the table. "However, before we discuss my conduct, I think it is only fair that we examine the conduct of the person who actually destroyed the document." Julian's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, the first crack appearing in his carefully constructed armor of arrogance.
