Chapter 6: The Emergency Board Summons

Dawn broke over the sprawling Vance estate, casting long, golden shadows across the manicured lawns. Inside the grand study on the second floor, the atmosphere was as cold and sharp as frosted glass. Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the gardens while buttoning a fresh white shirt and adjusting a new black tie. The emotional breakdown of the previous night had given way to a quiet, lethal determination. On the mahogany desk before him lay the encrypted flash drive Marcus had provided, containing the unedited security footage of Julian’s sabotage. Clara sat nearby, quietly drinking black coffee, her eyes fixed on her husband's back.

The heavy oak doors of the study swung open without a knock, and Grandmother Eleanor strode in, flanked by the estate's chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance, a distant cousin who handled the family trust. Eleanor took her seat at the head of the conference table, her blue dress immaculate despite the early hour. "Julian has called an emergency board meeting for ten o'clock this morning," Eleanor announced without preamble. "He claims your public outburst in the ballroom last night proves you are mentally unfit to retain the CEO position, Evelyn. He intends to motion for an immediate vote of no confidence."

Evelyn turned away from the window, walking slowly toward the desk. He did not look panicked; instead, a cold, focused energy radiated from him. "Let him call the meeting," Evelyn said steadily. "Julian thinks he orchestrated the perfect coup, but he made one fatal mistake. He forgot about the security cameras." Clara offered a faint, approving smile, setting her coffee cup down. Arthur, the legal counsel, leaned forward, placing a pair of reading glasses on the bridge of his nose. "Have you reviewed the footage, Evelyn? Is it clear enough to withstand corporate scrutiny?"

"Crystal clear," Evelyn replied, picking up the flash drive and holding it up between his fingers like a loaded weapon. "It shows Julian stepping out of the shadows, deliberately nudging the acquisition contract off the table, and watching it shatter next to Lily. It establishes premeditation, malice, and corporate sabotage." Arthur let out a low whistle, removing his glasses and shaking his head. "If we present this to the board, Julian won't just lose the vote—he could face criminal charges for fraud and defamation. It’s an open-and-shut case."

Grandmother Eleanor tapped her cane lightly against the floorboards. "Good. We strike precisely at ten. I want Julian to walk into that boardroom completely confident, thinking he has already won. Only when he presents his motion will we pull the rug out from under him." She looked up at Evelyn, her expression softening just a fraction. "And then, Evelyn, you must apologize to the board not for your temper, but for allowing a wolf to wear sheep's clothing in our inner circle for this long." Evelyn nodded slowly, accepting the reprimand. The battle for the Vance empire was about to begin, and there would be no prisoners taken.
