Chapter 8 - Bound in the Dark

The beam of the flashlight carved through the pitch-black shadows of the master bedroom, revealing a sight that made the seasoned police officer suck in a sharp breath. Tied securely to a heavy mahogany dining chair with thick industrial zip-ties was Leo’s father, David.
His mouth was gagged with duct tape, his eyes wide and bloodshot with sheer terror, and his designer shirt stained with sweat and dirt. When David saw the uniform and the young boy standing behind the officer, a muffled, desperate sob ripped through the tape, his body straining violently against the bindings.
"Dad!" Leo cried out, trying to push past the officer, but a strong hand held him back firmly.
"Hold on, kid, let us secure the room first," the officer commanded, stepping cautiously into the bedroom while sweeping his flashlight across every corner, checking for hidden threats. Finding the room otherwise empty, he rushed forward and ripped the duct tape off David’s mouth before slicing through the zip-ties with a pocketknife.
David gasped for air, his chest heaving as he collapsed forward, barely catching himself on the floor.
"David! David, are you alright?!" Margaret’s voice suddenly pierced the apartment as she burst through the front entrance, breathless and disheveled, having bypassed the security guards in her frantic rush up the stairs. She ran into the living room, her eyes darting past the paramedics who were now actively working on Clara. When she spotted Leo, she scooped him up into her arms, crushing him against her chest with fierce, desperate sobs. "Oh, my baby! Thank God you're alive!"
"Grandma..." Leo buried his face in her shoulder, finally letting go of the terror that had paralyzed him.
David stumbled out of the master bedroom, supported by the second officer. His face was a mask of shock and profound horror as he looked down at Clara, who was being loaded onto a stretcher by the paramedics.
"David, what in God's name happened here?" Margaret demanded, her voice shaking with rage and fear as she held Leo tightly. "Who did this to you? Who hurt Clara?"
David ran a trembling hand through his hair, his eyes glazed over as he stared at the crimson smear left on the hardwood floor. He looked at Leo, then at his mother, his lips trembling before he finally found his voice.
"It wasn't a break-in," David whispered, the words sounding hollow and unreal in the tense room. "It was someone we know."
Margaret stared at him, her heart skipping a beat. "Who, David? Tell me right now!"
Before David could answer, one of the paramedics tending to Clara on the stretcher shouted across the room.
"Officer, you need to see this! We found this clutched tightly in her hand when we cut the gown away!"

The paramedic held up a small, blood-stained silver cufflink, turning it over in his latex-gloved hand so the engraved initials caught the light. Margaret gasped, and David closed his eyes in pure despair, recognizing the initials instantly. It belonged to his own brother, Marcus.
