Chapter 12 - The Hidden USB

The mention of the flash drive sent a visible shudder through David’s entire frame. Margaret’s eyes narrowed as she stared at her ruthless younger son, her mind racing for any possible escape route. The balcony was blocked, the front foyer was a crime scene, and a gun was currently aimed at her eldest son's head.

"I don't know what flash drive you're talking about," Margaret lied smoothly, her voice remarkably steady despite the sheer terror gripping her heart.

"Don't play games with me, Margaret," Marcus warned, his tone dropping into a lethal register. "David hid the digital backup of every illegal transaction on a small encrypted drive. And there is only one person in this family he trusts enough to hold it." Marcus slowly shifted his gaze down past Margaret’s waist, locking eyes directly with seven-year-old Leo, who was trembling behind his grandmother.

Leo felt a cold chill wash over him. He remembered last week when his father had handed him a small, black plastic object shaped like a toy car, whispering, 'Keep this safe in your pajama pocket, Leo. It's a very important secret for Daddy.'

Marcus noticed the sudden panic in the boy’s wide eyes. A cruel, triumphant smile spread across his face.

"Ah, I see the little man has it," Marcus purred, stepping around David while keeping the gun aimed squarely at the group. "Hand it over, kid. Nice and slow."

"Don't you dare touch him!" Margaret screamed, stepping forward as a human shield.

Before Marcus could take another step toward them, the police officer who had been recovering from the scuffle lunged from behind the kitchen island, tackling Marcus sideways. The gun went off with a deafening roar, the bullet shattering a massive crystal chandelier overhead and sending a cascade of glittering glass shards crashing onto the floor.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" the officer roared, pinning Marcus to the hardwood floor and twisting his arm behind his back with bone-crunching force.

Marcus screamed in pain as the heavy metal handcuffs clamped securely around his wrists. The gun slid across the floor, coming to a rest right near Leo’s bare feet.

For a second, the penthouse was completely silent, save for the heavy breathing of the men and the ringing in everyone's ears from the gunshot.

Leo looked down at the gun lying inches from his toes, then slowly reached into his light blue pajama pocket, his fingers wrapping around the small toy-shaped flash drive his father had given him.

"Leo, give me that drive," David pleaded, stumbling forward with a desperate, frantic expression on his face. "Please, son. Daddy needs it."

Margaret grabbed Leo’s hand, pulling him back. "Don't give it to him, Leo. Look at your father's eyes. He's just as guilty as Marcus."

David froze, staring at his mother in utter betrayal. "Ma, you don't understand—if the feds get that drive, we lose everything. Our house, our money, our lives!"

"You chose greed over your own family, David," Margaret said, her voice laced with profound sorrow and icy resolve.

Suddenly, the front elevator chimes rang out again, much louder this time. The elevator doors slid open, revealing not paramedics or police backup, but a federal agent in a dark suit holding an arrest warrant.

"David Miller? You're under arrest for federal wire fraud and conspiracy," the agent announced, stepping into the room with a team behind him.

David slumped against the wall, defeated. But as the agents moved in to handcuff him, his hand slyly dipped into his pocket, pulling out a small backup remote that triggered a deafening blackout across the entire penthouse.
