Chapter 6 - The Crimson Gown

The horrifying reality of what he was seeing hit Leo like a physical blow. He stumbled backward, tripping over the edge of the wooden storage box and landing hard on his hands and knees against the freezing concrete. His breath came in ragged, terrified gasps as he stared up at the doorway.
Clara stood swaying in the threshold, her once-pristine blonde hair matted with sweat and blood. Her eyes were wide, vacant, and bloodshot, staring right through Leo as if he were nothing more than a ghost. Her lips parted, but no words came out—only a faint, wet rattle from deep within her throat.
"Clara..." Leo sobbed, too terrified to crawl toward her, too frozen to run away.
From the floor a few feet away, Margaret’s frantic voice still blared from the dropped smartphone. "Leo! Leo, what was that scream? Talk to me! What is happening up there?!"
Clara slowly lowered her gaze, looking down at her hands, which were covered in the same dark, crimson fluid that soaked the front of her expensive gown. She lifted her right hand sluggishly, as if it weighed a thousand pounds, and stared at her palm with a look of profound, agonizing confusion.
Then, her knees buckled.
With a soft, sickening thud, Clara collapsed forward, her body crashing onto the hardwood floor just inside the apartment boundary, leaving a smear of dark red across the polished surface.
The silence that followed was absolute, save for the faint, tinny sound of Margaret’s voice echoing from the balcony floor. “Leo! If you don't answer me right now, I swear to God—”
Leo scrambled on his hands and knees toward the fallen phone, his trembling fingers scooping it up and pressing it frantically to his ear.
"Grandma!" Leo screamed, tears streaming down his face in hot, heavy rivers. "Clara's on the floor! She's bleeding! There's blood everywhere!"
"What?!" Margaret shrieked, the sound of screeching tires bleeding through the speaker as she executed a sharp, dangerous turn into the penthouse driveway. "I'm pulling into the underground garage right now! Where is your father, Leo? Did he do this?"
"I don't know! Dad isn't here!" Leo sobbed hysterically, looking back toward the fallen body of his stepmother.
As if summoned by the mention of his name, a loud, violent pounding echoed from the private elevator foyer on the opposite side of the penthouse. Someone was hammering furiously against the heavy double doors, shouting muffled words that were entirely unintelligible.

And then, the private elevator chime chimed brightly, announcing the arrival of the police.
