Chapter 9 - The Encrypted Drive

The soft hum of the study’s computer tower seemed to amplify a hundredfold as Agent Miller’s hand rested heavily on his firearm. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly from an investigation into corporate fraud to a high-stakes standoff involving entities far more powerful than Wall Street boardrooms.

"Mrs. Vance," Agent Miller said, his voice dropping into a flat, dangerous monotone. "Put the flash drive back on the desk and step away from the table. Both of you."

Astra didn't flinch. Instead, she stepped in front of Clara, using her own body as a shield between her niece and the federal agent. "You’re not SEC, are you, Miller? The real SEC doesn't carry unmarked tactical comms in their breast pockets."

Miller’s expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed. Slowly, he let go of his holster and reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a sleek, unbranded satellite phone. He punched a single button, and a digitized voice echoed through the encrypted speaker.

“Secure the asset,” a raspy, electronically altered voice commanded through the phone. “Retrieve the drive. Eliminate witnesses if protocols dictate.”

Clara didn't hesitate. Years of surviving on the periphery of the elite, noticing the small details others ignored, had taught her how to move when survival demanded it. While Miller was distracted by the call, her hand swept across the desk, snatching the encrypted flash drive and the charred diary. She lunged toward the heavy velvet curtains covering the study’s floor-to-ceiling windows.

"Clara, no!" Astra screamed as Miller drew his weapon and lunged forward.

Clara threw her weight against the glass pane. The reinforced security glass cracked with a sharp, spider-web pattern, but didn't shatter. She swung her elbow backward, striking the center of the fracture with all her might. The glass gave way, showering the terrace below with glittering shards that mirrored the chandelier from the ballroom downstairs.

Without looking back, Clara vaulted through the shattered window into the freezing night air, tumbling onto the stone patio of the estate's sprawling back gardens. Rain began to spit from the dark Manhattan sky, instantly soaking the black fabric of her maid uniform.

Footsteps pounded on the glass behind her. Agent Miller’s voice rang out into the rainy courtyard. "Stop right there! You cannot outrun a federal directive!"

Clara scrambled to her feet, ignoring the sharp sting of a glass splinter embedded in her palm. She sprinted toward the wrought-iron perimeter gates, clutching the flash drive and the diary tightly against her chest. The labyrinthine hedges of the estate loomed around her like towering prison walls, hiding her in the deep shadows of the midnight storm.

As she reached the maze entrance, a black town car slid silently out of the mist, its headlights off. The rear door swung open, and a gloved hand reached out, grabbing Clara by the collar and pulling her violently into the dark interior before the car accelerated into the night.
