Chapter 2 - The Weight of Brass and Silver

The tarnished silver locket sat on the mahogany table like an unexploded ordnance. Its surface was marred by deep scratches, yet the engraved monogram—JS crossed with a weeping willow—was unmistakable to everyone in the high-society inner circle. Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks, her manicured hand hovering mid-air. The glittering silver of her sequin dress seemed to lose its luster as the color drained entirely from her face.

Julian closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, the armor of his stoicism cracking. The protective barrier he had maintained between Clara and the ravenous wolves of the elite had officially collapsed.

"Where did you get that?" Eleanor breathed, her voice dropping from a shrill shriek to a dangerous, icy whisper. She took a slow step toward the table, her eyes darting between the locket and Julian’s unreadable expression. "That piece of metal... that went down with the yacht twenty years ago. Along with the rest of them."

Clara didn’t flinch. The tears had stopped, replaced by a cold, hardened resolve that transformed her posture from submissive servant to an equal adversary. She lifted her chin, the white ruffled collar of her maid uniform framing a neck that suddenly carried the weight of an empire.

"It didn't go down, Mrs. Vance," Clara said, her voice steady and ringing clearly across the silent ballroom. "It was handed to my mother on the docks the night the fire started. The night you paid off the harbor master to look the other way."

Gasps rippled through the guests. Several socialites discreetly stepped backward, eager to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal, yet entirely paralyzed by morbid curiosity. Astra watched from the shadows, her champagne flute remaining untouched, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of dread and vindication.

Julian finally spoke, his voice low, measured, and dangerously calm. "Eleanor, sit down. We are not doing this here, in front of half of Manhattan."

"Don't you dare tell me to sit down!" Eleanor snapped, spinning to face him, her fury reigniting with terrifying intensity. "You brought her here. You hired her into this very house, didn't you? You knew all along!"

"I found out three weeks ago," Julian admitted quietly, stepping away from Clara to bridge the distance between himself and his wife. "Just like you are finding out now."

Eleanor’s chest heaved beneath the glittering sequins. She looked from Julian to Clara, her mind racing to connect the impossible dots. "If she’s who I think she is... then the entire estate doesn't belong to us. It never did."

Clara reached out, her fingers gently brushing the cold metal of the locket. "You took everything from my family under the guise of an accident. But the ledgers survived the flames, and I have the keys to the safety deposit box."
