Chapter 8 - The Intercepted Transport

The blood-stained silver cuff gleamed under the desk lamp’s harsh light. Clara stared at it, a cold dread washing over her veins. The neat, calculated chess game she thought she was winning had suddenly transformed into an entirely different board, with rules she couldn't begin to comprehend.
"What message?" Clara demanded, her voice tight, the composed maid persona completely shedding to reveal the desperate daughter beneath.
Agent Miller stepped closer, placing the silver cuff on the mahogany desk with a dull, heavy thud. "He said: ‘The foundation trust is active, but the key to unlocking it isn't a number or a signature. It’s a confession.’ He didn't elaborate. But ten minutes after his transport vanished off the GPS grid, our office received an automated data dump from an encrypted offshore server. It contains the names of every co-conspirator involved in your father’s murder twenty years ago."
Clara’s breath hitched. "Every co-conspirator? That includes..."
"Politicians, federal judges, and senior partners at three major Wall Street firms," Miller finished, his expression grim. "Which is why the directive came down from the top five minutes ago to classify the entire case under national security protocols. As of right now, Miss Vance-Sterling, you are sitting on classified federal property."
Before Clara could process the magnitude of the shift, Astra rushed into the study, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her black slip dress torn at the hem where she had clearly run down the marble halls.
"Clara! Did you hear?" Astra cried, her eyes wide with panic. "The news trucks outside—they’re all getting emergency shutdown notices. The broadcast is being scrubbed in real-time!"
Agent Miller turned sharply toward Astra, his hand instinctively resting on the holster at his hip. "Mrs. Vance, this area is restricted. Step back."
"Don't talk to me about restrictions!" Astra snapped, ignoring the agent and grabbing Clara by the forearm. Her fingers were ice-cold. "Julian didn't just walk into an intercept. He gave himself up to them—the Syndicate. The group our father tried to expose before the fire. They didn't burn our family estate for corporate greed, Clara. They burned it to bury a state secret."
Clara stared at her aunt, the pieces of a puzzle she hadn't even known existed suddenly slamming into place with terrifying force. "A state secret? What are you talking about?"
Astra reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a heavy, encrypted flash drive, sliding it across the desk toward Clara. "Our father wasn't just an engineer. He was building the communications grid for the Department of Defense's black-budget surveillance initiative. Julian found out what the system was actually being used for, and he spent twenty years positioning himself inside the company to dismantle it from the inside out."

Agent Miller’s eyes locked onto the flash drive on the desk, his professional demeanor instantly vanishing, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness. He slowly unsnapped his holster.
