Chapter 5 - The Heir’s Return

The silence that followed the marshal’s declaration was absolute. The title—Vance-Sterling—hung in the air like a condemned sentence. Eleanor froze, her mouth slightly open, processing the surname she had spent two decades trying to erase from legal documents, property deeds, and memory alike. Julian simply closed his eyes, accepting the inevitable tidal wave he had known was coming since the day Clara walked through the mansion’s front doors three months ago.

"That's impossible," Eleanor hissed, stepping forward as if she could physically block the marshal from reaching Clara. "She’s a maid. Look at her clothes! Look at her station! She forged those papers!"

"The DNA tests were filed and verified by a federal judge three days ago, Mrs. Vance," the marshal replied impassively, holding up a certified document with a shimmering gold seal. "Miss Vance-Sterling chose to enter the property under employment to observe the state of the estate firsthand. Her legal counsel advised it."

Clara straightened her white ruffled collar, her posture radiating an innate authority that no uniform could conceal. She looked at Eleanor not with hatred, but with a chilling, dispassionate pity. "You thought you buried us under insurance payouts and shell corporations in the Cayman Islands. But paper burns, Eleanor. People talk. And ledgers hidden in walls tend to find the light."

Julian stepped away from his wife, closing the distance between himself and Clara. His expression was solemn, devoid of the defensive arrogance he usually wore like armor in these rooms. "You planned this meticulously," he said quietly, his voice pitched so only she could hear. "Every detail. Getting hired, waiting for the anniversary gala, breaking the silence in front of the entire board."

"I learned from the best," Clara replied evenly, her eyes locking onto his. "You taught me how to wait for the right leverage, Mr. Sterling. Only, unlike you, I’m using it to rebuild, not to steal."

Eleanor let out a sharp, breathless laugh, her glamorous facade completely fractured. She looked around the ballroom at the empty spaces where her loyalest sycophants had quietly slipped away through the side exits. "You think you’ve won? The accounts are frozen, sure. But the real assets—the offshore accounts, the overseas properties—you’ll never find them without the master decryption keys. And those are in my head."

Astra shook her head slowly, looking at her sister with a mixture of disgust and exhaustion. "Stop it, Eleanor. There are no offshore accounts left. I transferred them back to the corporate holding account this morning."

Eleanor whipped her head around, her eyes bulging in disbelief. "You did what?"

"I couldn't live with it anymore," Astra said softly, her voice steady. "The guilt eats you alive, Eleanor. I’m done running."

Before Eleanor could scream, the marshal stepped between them, gesturing to the officers. "Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, you are both requested to accompany us to federal headquarters for questioning regarding the 2004 arson and insurance fraud investigation."

As the officers moved in to place the cuffs on Julian and Eleanor, Clara reached into her pocket once more, pulling out a small, old-fashioned brass key and holding it up to the light. "You forgot one thing, Julian," she whispered as they led him past her. "The key to my father's safe."
