Chapter 7 - The Wax Seal

The red wax seal bore the distinct crest of the Sterling family—a soaring hawk clutching a broken chain. Clara stared at the envelope inside the pitch-black iron vault, her breath catching in her throat. The safe had been locked, yet the contents had clearly been swapped out recently. Julian hadn't just anticipated her arrival; he had anticipated every step of her meticulously planned revenge.
She reached inside with trembling fingers, peeling back the thick wax. Inside lay a single sheet of heavy cream stationery, covered in Julian’s elegant, fountain-pen handwriting.
“Dear Clara,” the letter began. “If you are reading this, it means my wife’s greed finally imploded, and you successfully dismantled the public facade of Vance-Sterling. I always knew you had your father’s tenacity. But you are looking for ghosts in an empty room. The real assets were never in this house, nor were they in the Cayman accounts Eleanor squandered. Check the foundation trust under your mother’s maiden name. I left it intact for you twenty years ago. — J.”
Clara dropped the paper as if it were burning her skin. The words echoed in her mind, fracturing the neat narrative of pure villainy she had constructed to justify her years of servitude. Julian wasn't just a co-conspirator in her family's ruin; he had been protecting her inheritance from the shadows all along.
Heavy footsteps sounded in the doorway behind her. Clara spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs, ready to face Astra or perhaps a returning officer. Instead, standing in the doorway was a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase and wearing an expression of grim urgency.
"Miss Vance-Sterling," the man said, flashing a federal ID badge. "Agent Miller, SEC Special Investigations. We need to secure the premises immediately. There’s been a development at the downtown precinct."
Clara narrowed her eyes, clutching the letter in her fist. "What kind of development? Julian and Eleanor were just taken into custody."
Agent Miller stepped further into the study, his eyes scanning the open iron safe before fixing on Clara. "Julian Sterling didn't go to the precinct. On the way to the squad car, his transport vehicle was intercepted by an un-marked tactical unit. He’s gone."
Clara felt the floor seem to drop away beneath her feet. "Gone? How do you intercept a federal prisoner transport in broad daylight in Manhattan?"

"He didn't escape, Miss Vance-Sterling," Miller said grimly, holding up a cracked, blood-stained silver cuff. "He surrendered to them willingly. And he left a message specifically for you."
