Chapter 9 - The Master of the House

“The real master?” Julian repeated, the words feeling alien and hollow on his tongue. He grabbed Clara by the starch of her collar, lifting her slightly off the concrete floor before Miller’s hand clamped down on his wrist with the force of a vise.

“Don't,” Miller warned, twisting Julian’s arm just enough to force him to release the old woman.

Clara smoothed her apron down without the slightest sign of panic. She looked up at Julian with an expression of mild disappointment, as if scolding a child who had spilled ink on a clean rug. “Violence doesn't suit a Vance, Julian. It’s messy. Your grandfather preferred poison; your father preferred isolation. You seem to favor hysterics.”

Julian rubbed his bruised wrist, his chest heaving as he glared at both of them. The illusion of safety, wealth, and normal domestic happiness had been completely stripped away, leaving only the cold, grey concrete of a subterranean cage.

“Take me to them,” Julian said through gritted teeth. “Take me to Emily.”

“Oh, she’s waiting for you,” Clara replied, turning toward a narrow steel staircase hidden behind the filing cabinets that led deeper downward into the earth. “She has been waiting for hours. She wanted to see if you would figure it out before the sedative wore off.”

Miller gestured toward the stairs with his chin. “After you, Mr. Vance. Let’s not keep your family waiting.”

Julian didn't have a choice. With his back against the wall and the police force revealed as an armed wing of a generational cult, his only path forward led into the dark. He took the first step down the metal grating, his boots ringing out in the enclosed stairwell. The air grew progressively warmer, the smell of ozone replaced by the rich, heavy scent of mahogany, pipe tobacco, and roasting coffee.

Descending deeper beneath the foundations of the grand estate, Julian realized with mounting horror that the house above them was merely a facade—a stage set built on top of a subterranean fortress designed to control every thought, birth, and death in the Vance lineage for over a century.

At the bottom of the stairs, a heavy oak door stood slightly ajar, warm golden light spilling out across the concrete floor.
