Chapter 11 - The Blueprint of Obedience

Julian slapped his father’s hand away, his chest heaving with a mixture of profound betrayal and blinding rage. “You burned down our home! You faked your death, you locked me in this lunatic asylum, and you built an entire life out of fabricated lies just to control every breath I take!”
His father—Arthur Vance—did not flinch. He simply sighed, clasping his hands behind his back as he turned back toward the fire.
“Control?” Arthur murmured, picking up his teacup from the tray. “No, Julian. It isn't control. It’s protection. The world outside these gates is chaotic, fragile, and utterly destructive. Look at what happened the moment you tried to raise a child without the trust’s guidance. You panicked. You screamed at empty air. You thought a maid was stealing a phantom baby.”
Emily set her teacup down with a sharp clink against the saucer. She stood up, walking over to Arthur's side and slipping her arm through his. She didn't look at Julian with love or fear; she looked at him with the detached clinical interest of a researcher observing a lab rat in a maze.
“He’s still resistant, Arthur,” Emily said, her voice entirely devoid of the warmth she had shown him during their three years of marriage. “Maybe the conditioning cycle wasn't deep enough. Maybe we need to reset the baseline.”
Julian felt the blood drain entirely from his face. He looked at the woman he had loved, the woman who had shared his bed and his home. “Emily... tell me you’re acting under duress. Tell me they threatened you.”
Emily turned her head and smiled coldly. “Julian, I’ve been running the trust’s psychological assessment program since before we met. Your entire courtship was a controlled variable in Subject 42’s behavioral trial.”
Julian felt his knees finally give out. He slid down the doorframe, hitting the Persian rug with a soft thud, his hands trembling as he gripped his hair. The realization settled over him like a lead weight: he had never made a single independent choice in his entire life. Every career move, every friend, every heartbreak, and every moment of happiness had been scripted, monitored, and adjusted by the people standing over him.

“And the baby?” Julian whispered into the floorboards, his voice cracking entirely. “Was she real at all?”
