Chapter 15 - Awakening in the Nursery

Julian reached the stone rim of the old well, his fingers trembling as he gripped the edge of the damp blue blanket. He pulled it back, staring down into the dark, echoing depths of the water far below.
Floating on the surface of the water, illuminated by the beam of a tactical flashlight that Miller had just flicked on from the ridge above, was not a child, not a doll, but a collection of sealed glass jars, bobbing gently against one another in the dark water—each one labeled with a date, a name, and a serial number.
Julian Vance. Subject 43. Current Status: Terminated.
Julian stared at the jar bearing his own birthdate, his own handwriting floating inside the amber liquid on a tiny slip of parchment. The reflection on the water wasn't his face anymore; it was the face of every man who had tried to escape this estate and failed, swallowed whole by a machine that recycled its own history generation after generation.

“Time to come home, Julian,” Arthur’s voice echoed softly from behind him.
Julian didn't look back. He closed his eyes, let go of the blanket, and allowed the strong, cold hands of Detective Miller to pull him gently back toward the warm, brightly lit nursery upstairs, where the crystal chandelier still fractured the light across the silk walls, and the monitor was just beginning to play its tinty, mechanical lullaby.
